종교의 성격을 두고, 이게 부산물에 불과하냐 아니면 인간이 자연과 사회환경에 적응한 결과물이냐를 두고 논란이 있습니다.
도덕의 성격을 진화의 틀로 훌륭하게 설명해 낸 조나산 하이트 교수의 새 TED강연 "Religion, evolution, and the ecstasy of self-transcendence"입니다.
종교를 집단선택에 따른 적응의 결과물이라고 설명합니다.
환경에의 적응은 크게 자연선택, 성선택, 집단선택 등 3가지 방식이 있는데, 종교나 이타성은 집단선택으로 설명이 잘된다는 것이지요.

영국 GPS공급업체인 Tomtom은 자동차보험회사인 Motaquota와 함께 운전자의 운전양상을 보험요율에 적용하는 시스템을 개발했다고 합니다. (해당 뉴스는 여기에)

내비게이션 기록은 보면 그 사람이 안전하게 운행하는지 거칠게 운행하는지 나타납니다. 이를 이용해 안전운행하는 사람에게는 보험료를 할인해 줄 수 있겠지요.

여기서 한걸음 더 나아가, 운전자가 여러 보험회사에게 입찰을 시킬수도 있을듯합니다. "나 이렇게 안전하게 운행해, 그러니 더 싼 보험료 제시하지 않을래?"라고 말입니다.

안전운전 캠페인보다 훨씬 의미있는 방식일듯합니다.

작고 귀여운 코알라를 본적 있으시지요.
아담한 크기이니, 그 소리도 귀엽지 않을까... 한다면, 오해입니다.
코알라는 소에 버금가는 바리톤입니다.
특히 숫 코알라가 그렇다는군요.
과학미국(Scientific American)이 "How the koala got its low voice"에서 코알라 소리를 들려주면서, 그 이유를 소개했습니다.
숫 코알라가 암 코알라에게 매력적으로 보이기 위해 경쟁하다 보니, 덩치가 아주 큰 양, 저음개발 전략을 취했기 때문이랍니다. 코알라의 저음은 소리를 내는 관이 50cm는 되야 하는데, 코알라의 목길이를 넘지요. 이 정도면 거의 소의 몸집이 돼야 한다는군요.
코알라는 대신 발성기관을 늘려 목 아래부분까지 내려가도록 했다는군요.

코알라는 여러모로 귀엽습니다. ^^;;;

Sometimes Happy People Focus on the Trees and Sad People Focus on the Forest: Context-Dependent Effects of Mood in Impression Formation

초록:
Research indicates that affect influences whether people focus on categorical or behavioral information during impression formation. One explanation is that affect confers its value on whatever cognitive inclinations are most accessible in a given situation. Three studies tested this malleable mood effects hypothesis, predicting that happy moods should maintain and unhappy moods should inhibit situationally dominant thinking styles. Participants completed an impression formation task that included categorical and behavioral information. Consistent with the proposed hypothesis, no fixed relation between mood and processing emerged. Whether happy moods led to judgments reflecting category-level or behavior-level information depended on whether participants were led to focus on the their immediate psychological state (i.e., current affective experience; Studies 1 and 2) or physical environment (i.e., an unexpected odor; Study 3). Consistent with research on socially situated cognition, these results demonstrate that the same affective state can trigger entirely different thinking styles depending on the context.

뇌를 조작하는 기생충

Toxoplasma gondi라는 기생충은 죄의 뇌에 기생한다. 그런데, 이 Toxoplasma gondi라는 기생충이 번식하기 위해서는 고양이가 필요하단다. 생존을 위해서는 쥐의 뇌가 필요한데, 번식을 위해서는 쥐가 필사적으로 도망치는 고양이가 필요하다니, 참 묘한 운명을 지닌 기생충이라 하지 않을 수 없다.

Toxoplasma gondi의 생존전략은 쥐의 뇌 조작이다. 쥐는 고양이 냄새만 맡으면 반사적으로 방어적인 태세를 갖추는게 본능. Toxoplasma gondi는 쥐의 뇌 변연계를 조작해 쥐가 고양이 냄새를 피하기 보다 접근하도록 한다.

쥐의 연구이긴 하지만, 혹시 인간에게도 이런 비슷한 일이 가능한 것은 아닐지? 미생물의 작용이 사람의 정서에 영향을 미칠수도 있지 않을까?

Cat odors induce rapid, innate and stereotyped defensive behaviors in rats at first exposure, a presumed response to the evolutionary pressures of predation. Bizarrely, rats infected with the brain parasite Toxoplasma gondii approach the cat odors they typically avoid. Since the protozoan Toxoplasma requires the cat to sexually reproduce, this change in host behavior is thought to be a remarkable example of a parasite manipulating a mammalian host for its own benefit. Toxoplasma does not influence host response to non-feline predator odor nor does it alter behavior on olfactory, social, fear or anxiety tests, arguing for specific manipulation in the processing of cat odor. We report that Toxoplasma infection alters neural activity in limbic brain areas necessary for innate defensive behavior in response to cat odor. Moreover, Toxoplasma increases activity in nearby limbic regions of sexual attraction when the rat is exposed to cat urine, compelling evidence that Toxoplasma overwhelms the innate fear response by causing, in its stead, a type of sexual attraction to the normally aversive cat odor.

미국 오리건주는 1994년 처음으로 (세계 최초인지, 미국 최초인지는 잘 모르겠음) 존엄사를 허용했습니다. 존엄사란 치료불가능한 상태의 사람이 의사의 도움으로 스스로 생명을 끓는 선택입니다. 의사의 도움에는 두가지 요소가 있습니다. 첫째, 우울증 등과 같은 마음의 병에 의한 결정이 아니라는 진단과, 둘째, 고통스럽지 않게 생을 마감할 수 있는 수단을 제공받는 것입니다.

미국 HBO가 존엄사를 다룬 How to Die in Oregon을 방영했고, 이 다큐멘타리가 2011년 선댄스 영화제 다큐멘타리 부문 Grand Jury Prize를 받았습니다.

사회적 지위와 위협민감성

외국인이 버스에서 노인을 폭행한 사건이 눈길을 끌었습니다. 영어강사일을 하는 사람인데 흑인이더군요. 버스에서 노인은 "shut up"이라고 했고, "깜둥이"라고 했답니다. 단지 언어의 느낌이 다른데서 온 충돌정도로 이해할법도 하지만 여기엔 보다 더 근원적인 심리작용이 있습니다.

영어를 모르는 한국인에게 영어를 가르치는 강사인 그가 한국인에게 shut up이 미국인이 쓰는 shup up과 같지 않다는 정도는 알고 있을겁니다. 깜둥이도 마찬가지고요. 원래는 negro급이지만, 미국사회의 negro만큼 심한 표현은 아니지요. 그럼에도 불구하고 그가 격분했던 이유는 그의 사회적 지위에서 설명할 수 있을듯합니다.

사회심리 학술지인 "성격과 사회심리 회보"의 최신호에 실신 연구에 따르면, 사회적 지위가 낮은 사람은 사회적 위협에 민감하게 반응하는 경향이 크다는군요. 다소 애매한 상황도 적대적으로 해석할 가능성이 높겠지요. 사회적 지위가 낮으면 사소하게 넘길수도 있을 말에 격분할 여지도 높습니다.

흑인의 사회적 지위가 낮은게 사회적 진실이지요. 특히 한국사회에서 흑인에 대한 편견은 원조 미국보다 더하면 더했지 덜하지는 않을겁니다. 외국인으로서, 흑인으로서, 그 사람의 사회적 지위는 낮다고 할수 있습니다.

Lower-class individuals, because of their lower rank in society, are theorized to be more vigilant to social threats relative to their high-ranking upper-class counterparts. This class-related vigilance to threat, the authors predicted, would shape the emotional content of social interactions in systematic ways. In Study 1, participants engaged in a teasing interaction with a close friend. Lower-class participants—measured in terms of social class rank in society and within the friendship—more accurately tracked the hostile emotions of their friend. As a result, lower-class individuals experienced more hostile emotion contagion relative to upper-class participants. In Study 2, lower-class participants manipulated to experience lower subjective socioeconomic rank showed more hostile reactivity to ambiguous social scenarios relative to upper-class participants and to lower-class participants experiencing elevated socioeconomic rank. The results suggest that class affects expectations, perception, and experience of hostile emotion, particularly in situations in which lower-class individuals perceive their subordinate rank.

Empathy has been proposed to be a proximate mechanism underlying altruistic behavior. However, both empathy and altruistic behavior differ between human individuals with low and high socioeconomic status. Here we investigated whether subjective socioeconomic status (SSS) modulates the relationship between neural activity to perceived pain in others and human altruistic behaviors in a real-life situation. After being scanned using functional MRI while observing videos of others in pain, participants were invited to make an anonymous monetary donation to a charitable organization. Painful stimuli increased activity in the inferior frontal, insula and somatosensory cortices compared to non-painful stimuli. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that neural responses to perceived pain predicted the amount of monetary donations with different patterns in high and low SSS individuals. Stronger neural responses to perceived pain were associated with greater monetary donations in high SSS individuals, whereas a reverse pattern was observed in low SSS individuals. Our results suggest that SSS moderates the functional role of empathy-related neural activity in predicting altruistic behavior. Empathy may follow different mechanisms involved in altruistic behaviors (e.g., donation) depending on the social environment.

공장생산 스테이크

고기는 인류에 중요한 식품입니다. 그런데 고기를 생산하기 위한 댓가가 꽤 큽니다. 수십억마리의 동물들을 죽이기 위해 사육합니다. 생명존중의 문제뿐 아니라 환경부담도 상당합니다.

이런 문제를 해결하기 위한 다양한 시도가 있는데, 그중 하나가 줄기세포로 식용육을 배양하는 겁니다. NPR에서 보도한 내용인데, 아직은 실험실 수준에서 시도하고 있다고 합니다. 상용화할 경우, 식량문제를 해결할 수 있는 좋은 방법같습니다.

NPR에서는 실험실에서 배양한 고기를 먹는다는게 꺼림직하지 않겠냐는 투로 보도했지만, 오히려 살아있는 동물을 죽여, 그 살을 먹는게 자연스럽다고 여기는 그 발상이 더 꺼림직합니다.

GROSS: So let's talk about how scientists are experimenting with growing meat in the laboratories. Is this with stem cells, with cloning?

Mr. SPECTER: It's primarily with stem cells. They'll take a couple cells let's say from a pig. They will put them in a nutrient broth, a bunch of amino acids and sugars basically, sometimes fetal serum, and it will grow. And as it grows they will then try to turn those cells, which are muscle cells because that's mostly - when we talk about eating meat we're mostly talking about eating muscle. They will take those muscles cells and put them on a platform that is sort of normally a biodegradable plastic scaffolding. And that allows the cells to fuse together and become muscle tissue.

And the idea is as you grow those cells into muscle tissue, you grow the tissue, and you eventually have the same sort of meat, exactly the same meat that you would take from the flesh of an animal.

기억력에 대한 환상

이것 저것 많이 알고 있는게 반드시 좋기만 한 것은 아니다. 그만한 대가가 있기 때문이다.
런던 택시운전사들은 해마질의 뒷부분이 일반인보다 훨씬 크다. 복잡한 런던의 도로 정보를 머리 속에 저장해 놓다 보니, 공간기억을 담당하는 뒤쪽 해마질이 커졌다. 이 연구는 2000년영국 런던대학 맥과이어 연구팀이 발표한 연구로 많은 관심을 끌었고, 뇌는 쓰면 쓸수록 좋아진다는 사례로 널리 인용되고 있다.

그런데, 많은 사람들이 잘 모르는 연구가 맥과이어 연구팀이 2006년에 발표한 후속연구다. 이 연구에서 런던의 택시운전사들과 버스 운전사들을 비교했다.버스 운전자들은 정해진 노선을 운행하므로 택시운전자들처럼 도로 정보를 모두 머리 속에 저장해 놓을 필요가 없다.

기존 연구대로 택시운전사들의 뒷쪽 해마질이 더 컸다. 그런데 앞쪽 해마질은 택시운전사들이 작았다. 앞쪽 해마질은 새로운 정보를 습득하는 역할을 한다. 너무 많은 내용의 정보를 머리에 담고 있으면, 새로운 정보를 습득하는 능력이 현저하게 떨어질 수 있음을 의미한다.

이 연구는 기억을 많이 한다는게 뇌에 반드시 좋은게 아니란 점을 잘 보여주는 사례다. 아는 게 너무 많아도 탈이라는 "지식의 저주"라고나 할까.

이 연구는 소크라테스가 옳았다는 니콜라스 카의 주장이 오류라는 좋은 근거가 되기도 한다.(카는 그의 저서 "shallow"에서 소크라테스가 한 말 "책이란 게 나타나 사람들이 기억을 하려 하지 않고, 이로 인해 인간의 지적 능력이 퇴보한다"는 인용했다. 카는 소크라테스의 주장이 옳다며 기억을 네트웍에 의존하면 인류의 지적 능력이 퇴보할 것이라고 주장했다.)

Licensed London taxi drivers show that humans have a remarkable capacity to acquire and use knowledge of a large complex city to navigate within it. Gray matter volume differences in the hippocampus relative to controls have been reported to accompany this expertise. While these gray matter differences could result from using and updating spatial representations, they might instead be influenced by factors such as self-motion, driving experience, and stress. We examined the contribution of these factors by comparing London taxi drivers with London bus drivers, who were matched for driving experience and levels of stress, but differed in that they follow a constrained set of routes. We found that compared with bus drivers, taxi drivers had greater gray matter volume in mid-posterior hippocampi and less volume in anterior hippocampi. Furthermore, years of navigation experience correlated with hippocampal gray matter volume only in taxi drivers, with right posterior gray matter volume increasing and anterior volume decreasing with more navigation experience. This suggests that spatial knowledge, and not stress, driving, or self-motion, is associated with the pattern of hippocampal gray matter volume in taxi drivers. We then tested for functional differences between the groups and found that the ability to acquire new visuo-spatial information was worse in taxi drivers than in bus drivers. We speculate that a complex spatial representation, which facilitates expert navigation and is associated with greater posterior hippocampal gray matter volume, might come at a cost to new spatial memories and gray matter volume in the anterior hippocampus....

기업에도 성격이 있다

기업도 사람과 같다는 전형적인 발상은 법인(法人)이란 용어에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 사람같은 피와 살은 없지만, 사람처럼 권리를 행사하는 인격의 주체란 의미다.

이런 발상이 심리학에도 있는 기업의 브랜드 사람과도 같은 성격이 있다는 발상이다. 브랜드 연구의 대가인 데이빗 아커의 딸 제니퍼 아커의 박사논문에서 비롯된 개념이다. 아커는 사람의 5성격 모델을 적용해서 브랜드의 성격에 sincerity, excitement, competence, sophistication, ruggedness 등 5요인이 있다고 제시했다. 아커모델의 단점은 문화권별로 나타나는 브랜드의 5가지 성격이 다르다는데 있다.

보다 일관성있는 기업의 성격을 찾고자 하는 시도가 있었는데, 최근 태도연구에 사용하는 방법론을 이용해 기업의 성격을 4가지로 구분한 연구가 나왔다. 4가지는 honesty, prestige, power, innovation이다. presitige는 기업의 규모에, innovation은 기업의 성장성과 상관관계가 있다고 한다. 아래는 논문 초록이고, 논문은 여기.

As with any other object, people represent companies along a number of dimensions. But what are the key psychological dimensions that best describe companies, organizations, or brands? We apply research methods initially developed for studying attitudes, including attitudes to other people, to look at how the public represents corporate ‘personality’. The major dimensions that psychologically differentiate companies resemble human factors of personality and can be labelled Honesty, Prestige, Innovation, and Power. These dimensions are confirmed after a time gap of 1 year, also capturing specific changes in the rating of individual companies. The proposed methodology not only has substantial commercial value in helping companies understand and track their public perception, but scales of this type can potentially guide and manage the decision-making of individuals or groups inside and outside rated organizations, thus influencing their organizational culture.

미니멀리즘 음악의 개척자 스티브 라이쉬 (Reich는 "라이히"가 아니라 "라이쉬"라고 발음합니다. 이분은 미국사람이고, 본인이 그렇게 발음하기 때문입니다.

그의 대표작 중 하나가 "Music for 18 Musicians"입니다. 1974년에서 1976년 사이에 작곡한 작품입니다.

미니멀리즘 음악은 처음 들어보는데, 색다른 경험입니다. 음악의 새로운 지평이 열리는 느낌. 화음의 순환이 상당히 매력적입니다.

종교와 행복의 관계

종교를 갖는게 행복(주관적 안녕감)과 상관관계가 있다는 점은 잘 알려져 있습니다. 긍정심리학의 두 흐름(주관주의와 객관주의)에서 주관주의의 대표적인 학자인 에드 디너 연구팀이 세계적 규모의 설문을 통해 확인한 내용입니다. 그러나, 에드 연구팀은 여기서 멈추지 않았습니다. 종교가 사람을 행복하게 한다면 왜 많은 사람들이 종교계를 떠나냐는 의문을 제기했습니다. 특히 경제적으로 안정된 나라일수록 사람들의 종교 일탈 현상은 두드러집니다. 이에 답하기 위해 에드 연구팀은 자료를 분석했습니다.

연구팀이 찾아낸 사실은 세가지입니다. 첫째, 종교가 행복에 직접적으로 행복의 원인이 되는게 아니라, 종교활동이 사회적지지감, 존중감, 삶의 의미와 목적을 갖게 하고, 이를 통해 햄복하게 된다는 점입니다. 둘째, 경제적으로 곤궁하고 어려운 나라에서는 종교와 행복사이에 높은 상관관계가 있지만, 경제적으로 안정된 나라에서는 종교인이나 비종교인 사이에 행복감사이에 별 차이가 없었습니다. 세째, 행복과 종교의 관계는 문화적으로 종교적인 사회에서만 나타났습니다. 문화적으로 비 종교적인 지역에서 종교과 행복사이의 상관관계는 미약했습니다.

As we estimate here, 68% of human beings—4.6 billion people—would say that religion is important in their daily lives. Past studies have found that the religious, on average, have higher subjective well-being (SWB). Yet, people are rapidly leaving organized religion in economically developed nations where religious freedom is high. Why would people leave religion if it enhances their happiness? After controlling for circumstances in both the United States and world samples, we found that religiosity is associated with slightly higher SWB, and similarly so across four major world religions. The associations of religiosity and SWB were mediated by social support, feeling respected, and purpose or meaning in life. However, there was an interaction underlying the general trend such that the association of religion and well-being is conditional on societal circumstances. Nations and states with more difficult life conditions (e.g., widespread hunger and low life expectancy) were much more likely to be highly religious. In these nations, religiosity was associated with greater social support, respect, purpose or meaning, and all three types of SWB. In societies with more favorable circumstances, religiosity is less prevalent and religious and nonreligious individuals experience similar levels of SWB. There was also a person–culture fit effect such that religious people had higher SWB in religious nations but not in nonreligious nations. Thus, it appears that the benefits of religion for social relationships and SWB depend on the characteristics of the society.
