&lt;P&gt;아버지는 스무 살 되던 해, 큰 화재로 온몸에 화상을 입고 주치의로부터 아이를 갖기 힘들 것이라는 청천벽력과 같은 진단을 받았다. 결혼 전부터 어머니도 이 사실을 알고 있었기에 부모님 모두 아이에 대한 생각을 거둔 상황이었다. 하지만 기적적으로 어머니는 나를 임신하게 된다.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;어머니는 부른 배를 안고 아버지를 따라 가족, 친지 하나 없는 미국으로 건너오게 된다. 내가 태어난 직후, 한 회사의 매니저로 일하고 있던 아버지는 어머니가 조금이라도 더 편하게 쉴 수 있도록 나를 데리고 출근했다. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;천 기저귀를 고집했던 아버지는 매일 한 손에는 젖병, 다른 손에는 천 기저귀 가방을 들고 출근했고 사무실에서 기저귀를 갈고 퇴근해서 더러워진 기저귀를 빠는 생활을 반복했다. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;아버지는 당신의 자식 중 첫째인 나에게 무한한 사랑을 쏟았다. 장녀이기 때문이었는지 아버지는 나를 아들처럼 키우려고 했다. 남자 친구가 생기는 것에 지나치게 민감해 했고 대학 진학 전엔 호신술도 배우게 했다. 어릴 때부터 여자라는 이유로 차별 혹은 특별 대우를 받지 않아야 한다고 강조했고 스스로도 남자와 동등한 위치에 있다고 생각하도록 가르쳤다.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;매년 10월 열리는 사우스캐롤라이나 주 축제에는 각종 놀이기구들과 솜사탕·햄버거 등 먹을거리·볼거리가 가득했었고 아이들은 부모님이나 친구들과 함께 축제에 참가했다. 난 일곱 살 때 가족 모두와 처음 축제장을 찾았다. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;아버지는 놀이기구 하나를 가리키며 탈 수 있느냐고 물었고 나는 고개를 들어 놀이기구의 높이를 보자마자 겁에 질렸다. 그런 내 모습을 본 아버지는 “마거릿, 내가 옆에 있을 테니 너무 걱정하지 마”라고 말했다.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;놀이기구의 키 제한을 겨우 넘긴 나는 아버지 손을 꼭 잡고 놀이기구에 올랐다. 타자마자 온몸이 떨릴 정도로 공포에 질렸지만 놀이기구가 끝날 쯤에는 이렇게 신나는 게 또 있을까 싶을 정도로 즐기고 있었다. 지금도 아버지와 나는 함께 놀이기구를 탈 뿐만 아니라 뭔가 같이할 수 있는 것들을 찾으려고 노력한다. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;나는 놀이기구를 탈 때마다 아버지와 처음 탔던 그 순간을 떠올린다. 아버지는 내가 뭐든지 할 수 있는 용기를 갖게 도와줬고 동생들이 본받을 수 있는 듬직한 첫째 딸로 성장할 수 있도록 이끌어 줬다.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;고등학교 시절, 대학을 위한 선행학습 결과 시험을 앞뒀을 때, 대학 입학원서와 면접을 준비했을 때, 열한 살 나이에 많은 사람 앞에서 발표하기 전, 해외여행과 멕시코·한국 어학연수를 떠날 때, 취업 준비에 한창이었을 때, 아버지는 항상 “마거릿, 너는 잘해낼 거야”라고 얘기해 줬다.&lt;BR&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;BR&gt;내가 긴장하고 두려워할 때조차 아버지는 안쓰러워하기보다 자신감을 북돋워 줬고 이는 결국 내가 하고자 하는 일에 대한 믿음과 나의 가능성에 대한 자신감으로 되돌아 왔다.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;내가 지금의 홍보 전문가로 성장할 수 있었던 것은 아버지 덕이다. 어릴 때 아버지가 내게 가르쳐준 목표 의식과 자신감으로 남자 상사들 밑에서도 내 역할을 충실히 할 수 있었고 어리다거나 여자라는 핑계로 일을 하기 어렵다는 생각을 가지지 않게 됐다. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;또 아버지와 같이 직장과 가정 모두를 조화롭게 지켜내는 사람이 가장 행복한 사람이라고 생각하기 때문에 일과 내 인생의 균형을 맞추기 위해 노력하고 있다. 사회생활을 시작하고 얼마 지나지 않아 엄마가 됐기 때문에 가정과 일 모두를 잘해내고 싶었다. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;지금 내가 이 위치에 와 있게 해준 아버지는 내 인생의 최고의 축복이다. 비록 몸은 멀리 떨어져 있지만 언제나 나를 지켜주고 나의 가능성을 믿어주는 가장 든든한 후원자인 아버지가 있기에 오늘 하루도 자신 있게 살아가고 있다.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;/P&gt;

That’s the reason why I wanted to learn.” &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;At the open kitchen of the Asian Live restaurant in southern Seoul, Key - head of the Korean unit of Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations and communications firm - rolled her big dark eyes with surprise upon seeing a large pumpkin that chef Shin Hyun-joon had prepared in advance. Assisted by a chef from the COEX InterContinental Seoul hotel, Key started peeling and deseeding the balloon-sized pumpkin. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Because the pumpkin was quite large, Key sliced the pumpkin into small pieces with difficulty, then put it in a mixer for a few seconds. She then put the sliced pumpkin into boiling water and let it simmer for 40 minutes to make a puree.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;While the vegetable was left to boil on low heat, Key spoke about her business in Korea, the promotion industry and what changes she has overseen in her time in Asia. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Before joining Burson-Marsteller Korea in March, Key was the managing director of Edelman Japan, also a global communications promoting firm. She also served as general manager of Edelman Korea for more than eight years. Her work for Burson-Marsteller Korea has mainly been with the Korean government. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;“In the past, every client on the consultancy side, would ask for a media-monitoring report, whereas today, more and more clients want an online-communications report,” she said. “Clients are willing to know which bloggers are writing about them and [who] searches them online. The monitoring or surveillance space has become larger.”&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;With that trend, Key suggested that promoting hansik, or Korean food, using social media networks, such as Twitter, Facebook and blogging services, could help raise global awareness and create buzz. Uploading videos on YouTube on directions to cook Korean dishes is also a great way to promote Korean food, she said. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;“A tweet is 140 characters - very limited in what you express - but that’s the power of Twitter as it picks up somebody’s interest,” Key said. “The Korean government should create a Twitter account only for Korean food. But it should be prepared to maintain consistency in sending out messages.”&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Key proposed several strategies based on her decade-long experience as a PR specialist. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;“Inviting journalists from around the world [who] write about food [to] come to Korea, give them a tour of the best and letting them go back and writing stories would definitely pick up interest globally,” she said. “Invite the world to come to Korea and let them see themselves.”&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Promoting something, however, is never easy, Key admits, just like how making hobakjuk is more complex than it is seen on the outside. &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;“Many people take PR for granted. They would think it’s simple than it really is,” she said. “It is important to find the right channel to be able to give people the right information, which is the role of us, PR practitioners.”&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;On one side of the kitchen, the pumpkin porridge was boiling and nearly cooked. Key tasted the porridge to see if either sugar or salt should be added for flavor.
