Synopsis

태안의 자갈 해변에 돌 하나가 있다.

이 돌은 다른 돌과 똑같아 보이지만 실은 오래 전 우주에서 온 외계생명체다.

수 만 년 간 움직이지 않고 잠자고 있던 외계의 돌은 태안의 기름유출로 검은 기름을 뒤집어쓴다.

잠에서 깬 외계의 돌은 몸을 굴리며 서해안을 따라 여행을 떠난다.

Here is one stone on the gravel beach, Taean.

This stone seems to be the same as other stones,
but it is alien form of life which came from outside Earth long time ago.

The alien stone, which had slept motionless for thousands of years,
was covered all over with black oil caused by oil spill by the crash of an oil tanker in Taean.

The alien stone is awakened and starts on a journey along the west coast.

Statement

태안기름유출 사건을 인간의 관점이 아닌 기름에 덮인 무생물 돌의 입장에서 애니메이션을 만들었다.

지구도 하나의 생명체로 볼 수 있듯 우주적 관점에서 무엇이 생명체이고 아닌가는 인간의 사고를 초월한다.

움직이지 않는 태안의 돌이 겪는 내적 트라우마를 4만5천 장의 사진들을 픽실레이션(Pixilation) 기법으로 영상화했다.

After Taean oil spill in South Korea, I made this animation from the stone’s point of view instead of human.

From the cosmic view, the definition of a life form is beyond human thought
as the Earth can be regarded as a life form.

Inner trauma experienced by the unmoving stone in Taean was visualized
with 45,000 photos by the technique of pixilation.

시카고에서 미네아폴리스로 향하는 비행기 안에서 찍은 연속 사진을 이용한 작품.

눈 덮인 광활한 대지를 드로잉 하듯 사진에 담아 애니메이션을 더했다.

하늘에서 움직이는 풍경들이 Macro와 Micro를 오가며 뷰파인더에 자동으로 그려진다.

Synopsis

제주 4.3은 '빨갱이의 섬'으로 낙인 찍힌 채 민족 분단과 이념적 대립으로 대량 학살이 자행되어

3만명 이상이 목숨을 잃은 한국현대사의 비극적인 사건이다.

이 작품은 4.3 항쟁이 처음 시작되는 1948년 4월 3일 새벽의 상황과 그 사건 속의 인물들의

감정을 추상 애니메이션으로 표현했다.

제주돌담과 팽나무 너머 새벽까지 타오르는 봉화의 불꽃은 제주도민의 무겁게 짓눌린 감정과

칠흙같이 어두운 역사의 현장을 상징적으로 밝힌다.

Jeju 4.3 is a tragic event in the modern history of Korea that took the lives of over

30,000 people, with an island being branded as “the red commie island” as

a result of a divided nation and ideology. This film describes through abstract

animation the circumstances of the early morning on April 3rd, 1948 when the 4.3

Resistance began and what went through the minds of the people involved.

The flames of the beacon burning bright until the morning over the stone walls of

Jeju light up the heavy hearts of the oppressed people of Jeju Island and the

pitch-black darkness of a historical event.

Statement

‘제주 4.3의 새벽’은 한국의 어둡고 아픈 역사를 다루고 있다. 냉전의 대립과 이념의 차이로 인해

수 많은 사람들이 목숨을 잃었고 살아남은 사람들은 아직도 그들의 흔적을 찾고 있다. 이 작품은

지금으로부터 60년 전, 1948년의 4월 3일, 제주 섬에서 일어난 억눌린 사람들의 타오르는 항쟁

의 새벽을 묘사하고 있다. 사건의 구체적인 현장묘사보다는 봉기가 일어난 새벽의 인물들의 터질

듯한 감정의 파동과 긴장을 추상적으로 애니메이션 시켜 그 당시의 떨림을 함께 하고 싶었다.

그들의 세포 감각 말단에서 꿈틀거리는 슬픔과 분노를 추상적으로 시각화하고 어둠 속에서

순간순간 보이는 사건의 꼴라주를 통해 이 작품을 보는 관객들이 제주 민중의 감정적 발화를

공감각적으로 경험하여 재구성하게 하고자 했다.

‘The Dawn of Jeju 4.3’ deals with the dark and painful part of Korean history.

The conflict of cold war and difference in ideology took away countless lives,

and those who survived are still searching for those that were killed.

This film goes back sixty years to April 3rd, 1948 and portrays the dawn of

resistance breaking in the oppressed people of Jeju Island. Rather than

describe the details of the surroundings, it utilizes abstract animation to show

the explosive, powerful feelings of the people who were at the heart of the

uprising at dawn, thereby sharing in the tense trepidations of the time.

By visualizing in an abstract way the writhing sorrow and anger lying at the

bottom of their very cells and by showing a collage of the different moments of

incident in the darkness, I hoped the film would enable the audience watching

to recreate the incident and experience first-hand the emotional ignition of the

people of Jeju.

Synopsis

자각몽(自覺夢)은 꿈을 꾸는 동안 갑자기 이것이 현실이 아니라는 생각이 들고,

깨어 있을 때와 마찬가지로 사고하고 분별할 수 있을 때를 말한다.

나는 어릴 때부터 가끔 이상한 꿈을 꾸곤 했는데 동그란 원형의 물체들이 사각의 벼랑 아래로

끊임없이 떨어지는 것이었다. 알 수 없는 추상의 움직임이 무한 반복되고 나는 어느 순간 이게

꿈이라는 것을 자각하게 되었지만 깰 수도 없이 그저 그 광경을 바라만 보았다.

잠에서 깬 후 나는 내가 꾸어왔던 꿈을 현실의 영상으로 만들었다.

만든 작품을 보고 있으면 내가 꿈에서 본 이미지와 내가 현실에서 만든 이미지가 연결되며

다시 자각몽를 꾸게 된다.

During 'Lucid Dreaming,' one realizes that the dream is not reality and is able to

think and discern just as when one is awake. Since I was young, I've dreamt

strange dreams sometimes. Round objects continued to fall beneath a square cliff.

The incomprehensible abstract movement continued endlessly and at one point,

I realized that it was dream, but I couldn't wake up so I just gazed it.

After I woke up, I made it into a realistic image. When I look at my work,

the image that I saw in my dream and the image that I've made in reality

becomes connected, and I once again have a 'Lucid Dreaming.

Statement

내가 꿈에서 생생하게 본 이미지들을 다시 영상화하면서 나는 자각몽을 꿀 때와 같은 경험을

하게 된다. 내가 만든 추상적인 이미지들의 질감, 색상, 형태 등은 내가 만든 것들이면서

나의 통제를 벗어난 것이기도 하다. 꿈과는 다르게 나의 신체를 움직여 이미지들을 만들어

내지만 그것들은 우연성을 가지며 스스로 독립적이기도 하다. 종이의 자연적인 질감 위에

검은 먹과 다양한 색상의 물감안료의 혼합, 그리는 과정에서의 나의 신체와 예술적 사고의

우연한 결합, 이 모든 과정들을 거쳐 만들어진 영상은 나를 다시 꿈꾸게 한다.

영상을 보고 있으면 내가 꿈에서 보았던 추상의 형태들이 연상되고 나는 지금 다시 꿈을

꾸고 있구나 하는 자각이 든다. 꿈의 자각몽과 현실의 자각몽, 나의 영상은 두 시공간 사이를

이어주며 나의 꿈에서의 깨어있는 경험을 다른 이들에게까지 확장시킨다.

As I made the images that I've seen in my dream, I experienced 'Lucid Dreaming.'

The textures, colors, and shapes of the abstract images are my work, but they are

no longer under my control. Unlike my dream, the images which I've made myself

have contingency and independence. When the black Chinese ink and various

colors of paint mix on the natural texture of the paper, my physical and artistic

speculations accidently combine. The images which are made through all these

procedures make me dream once again. When I watch the images, they remind

me of the abstract shapes I've seen in my dreams, and I feel as if I'm dreaming

again. My images connect the 'Lucid Dreaming' which exists both in my dreams

and reality, and the awakened experience in my dreams is expanded to others.

Synopsis

한 동물원 우리 안의 호랑이는 매일 자신을 둘러싸고

호기심 있게 관찰하는 사람들의 반응에 익숙하다.

그러던 어느 날 호랑이는 우연한 사건을 계기로 우리를 나와 거리를 돌아다니게 된다.

고함치며 도망가는 사람들...

모두들 호랑이를 보자마자 숨고 비명 지르고 피해버린다.

이를 이상하게 생각하며 거리를 방황하던 호랑이는 바람에 섞인 달콤한 냄새를

발견하고 입맛을 다신다.

A contented tiger lovingly reared in captivity escapes from the zoo,

discovering an outside world that somehow seems familiar? But in fact isn’t.

This is a visually stunning tale, symbolic on many levels, about the devices

people use to arbitrarily define situations or individuals.

Statement

장소에 따라 똑같은 호랑이를 바라보며 서로 다른 행동을 보이는 것은

바로 호랑이를 에워싸고 있는 울타리 때문이다.

이 자그만 경계가 우리의 사고와 행동을 다르게 만든다.

우리가 호랑이를 바라보고 양면의 모습을 취하는 것처럼

때로는 다른 사람, 다른 인종 또는 다른 생각에 대하여 이중의 모습을 취한다.

‘幻’(Whan) means illusion.

In this story, there is a huge gap between the tiger and the people.

The people are inconsistent to the tiger and act differently without the cage.

What makes the people avoid the tiger and shoot her?

It is the cage. Through the existence of the cage,

the tiger’s individual identity is erased.

Synopsis

한 소녀가 오솔길을 따라 걷는다.

멀리 다른 소녀가 땅에 무언가를 묻고 있는 것이 보인다.

한 동안 서로 바라보다가 서 있는 소녀가 앉아서 흙을 덮고 있는 소녀에게

무엇을 묻고 있냐는 듯이 손으로 가리킨다.

아랑곳없이 흙을 계속 덮고 앉아있는 소녀,

둥그런 흙 두덩에 작은 나뭇가지를 꽂고 아무 말 없이 서 있는 소녀를 보듬고

길 저 너머로 사라진다.

나란히 길을 걷는 두 소녀 스르륵 하나가 된다.

Statement

무엇을 묻어두고 싶은 소녀와 무엇이 묻혀있는지 모르고 떠나는 소녀의 이야기.

Synopsis

한 평원에 해바라기가 따스한 햇빛을 받으며 서 있다.

어느 날 땅에서 거대한 기둥이 솟아 나와 빛을 가린다.

이 때 해발아기들이 눈을 뜨며 꽃 밖으로 튀어나간다.

그리고는 붉은 새로 변해 하늘로 올라가서 돌의 기둥으로 떨어진다.

마침내 마지막 남은 새가 떨어지고 그 자리에 해바라기가 다시 피어난다.

There is a field filled with lots of Sunflowers in bloom.

But rising from the ground, huge buildings begin to screen them from

the sunshine. Then they absorb all flowers.

Time goes by, a Red Bird appears in the sky and looks down the earth gently

and then plunges into it.

Statement

“해發芽記”는 하나의 존재가 거대한 시스템의 그림자를 벗어나

빛을 보는 과정을 상징화한 작품이다.

I'd like to illustrate Civilization and Nature, wide gap between the Civilization

and the Nature and the way to overcome the problems caused by them

through symbolization in this animation.

Sunflower symbolizes an organization which consist of individuals, so its seeds

represent individuals. A Red Bird is a person who has been awakened,

changed, and is pursuing and moving towards change.

Synopsis

유리병 안에 장난감 병정이 있다.

병 안에는 물이 가득 차 있고 병정은 그 안에서 세상을 본다.

움직일 수도 없는 그가 할 수 있는 일은 오로지 바깥을 내다보는 일 뿐이다.

그가 알고 있는 사실은 자신이 장난감이라는 것 하나다.

어느 날 유리병 앞으로 토끼 인형 한 마리가 떨어진다.

Statement

토끼 인형은 움직이고 있지 않았다.

다시 한 번 제목을 말하면 토끼는 움직이지 않았다.

병정 자신이 유리병 안에서 굴절된 벽을 통해 상상하고 있었던 것이다.

그리고 어느 날 병정은 토끼의 눈에 비친, 유리병 안에 있는 자신을 발견하게 된다.

자신이 지금껏 바라보고 있었던 모든 것들이 실제의 것과 다르다는 것을

토끼라는 존재를 통해 알게 된 것이다. 이 사건을 계기로 세계는 내가 보고 있는 것과

다르다는 것을 자각하게 된다.
