Why you should study English pronunciation

First impressions

Pronunciation is definitely the biggest thing that people notice when you are speaking English. Let us tell you a personal anecdote about this :

We once went to a conversation class taught by native speaker(American). Before the class started, the teacher said to us : "So, do you speak good English?. Tom replied "We think so", and the guy said "It sure sounds like you do".

Notice that we just said three words, and the teacher could already tell if our Englsih was good or bad. Why did the teacher think our English was good? Because of the difficult words we used? No. Because we used advanced grammar structures? No. It was our pronunciation.

When you meet a person, and you just say a sentence or two, do you think they will notice your poor vocabulary or bad grammar? probably not. But they will notice if your pronunciation is good or bad. If your pronunciation is poor, they will immediately think about you as "the guy/girl who speaks bad English". Your pronunciation creates the first impression you make.

Communication

Good pronunciation should be one of the first things that you learn in English. You can live without advanced vocabulary - you can use simple words to say what you want to say. You can live without advanced grammar - you can use simple grammar structures instead. But there is no such thing as "simple pronunciation". If you don't have good pronunciation, you have... bad pronunciation.

And the results of bad pronunciation are tragic. Even if you use great vocabulary and grammar, people may simply not understant what you want to say.

In our opinion , you should know how to say Englsih sounds like the 'ee' in sleep or the 'o' in ghost, before you even learn words like sleep and ghost.

Here is another anecdote about this. After coming back from a vacation in the USA, a friend of Tom's sand:

"Whenever I spoke to a person in America, they kept asking me "What? What?". I would repeat my sentence again and again. Finally they would say "Ah-ha!" and then say my sentence, using exactily my words! It was very humiliating. I knew my words and grammar were good, but nobody would understand me, just because of my pronunciation. I am very motivated to learn English now."

Can you communicate in Englsih?

Almost all English learners say "I don't need to study pronunciation. I just want to communicate in English because they can communicate with their teacher and other student.

Do not make this mistake! You have to remember that :

- Your teacher has beem listening to bad English for years. He os she can understand it mush more easily than the average person.

- Other students are usually from the same country as you. Therefore, they speak English like you and they make the same mistakes. So it is easy for them to understand you.

The only true test is : Go to America or Britain and try to talk to "normal people" - a clerk at a supermarket, a bus driver, etc. If they can understand you, then you can say that you can communicate in English.

Unfortunately, many learners ignore pronunciation. They can communicate in class, so they think they are good enough. After a few years they go to England or the USA and... nobody understands what they are saying. Remember Tom's friend who went on vacation to America and couldn't communicate? He was the best student in his English class.

Michal wrote a short story about people living on two islands where English is spoken. The story is for those who say : "I don't need to learn pronunciation because I only want to communicate."

Communication is not enough

If you can communicate in English with people from other countries, congratulations! It's a big achievement. But it may not be enough.

We have already said that your pronunciation is important because it makes your first impression. This is certainly true - nobody will say that you speak good English if you have a strong foreign accent. But there is more. If you have a pleasant accent, people will simply enjoy talking to you. they will want to spend time with you. on the other hand, if your accent is bad, people may be even avoiding you (consciously or un consciously).

The good news is that you can work on your pronunciation until you speak "understandable and pleasant Englsih"( we simply call it good pronunciation). for example, you can learn the sounds of English, listen to recordings, watch English language television, etc. But first you have to realize there is a problem! Most English learners dont't.

이상하게 오늘은 노출수도 다른날 보다 좋고 클릭수도 다른날보다 2~3배 좋은데...

수입은 1달라도 안되는군요...

NEXT FLOOR 08 (한강 클럽 페스티벌~)

한강 난지 공원에서 금,토 양일간 열린 NEXT FLOOR 08 공연중

토요일 저녁에 잠시 다녀왔다..

이번공연은 라인업부터가 세계유명 디제이 들부터 해서 우리나라 인디밴드까지 클럽스테이지와 넥스트 플로어 스테이지 양쪽에서 공연을 하였다...

내가 갔을때는 넥스트플로어 스테이지에서 넬이 공연 중이였다..

비는 안왔는데 사람이 생각했던것 만큼 많지는 안았다.. 그리고 외국인은 좀 많고..

아마 너무 이른씨깐이여써 그랬냐??? 대부분 디제이 공연은 10시이후..

또 금요일은 클럽데이 였는데, 금요일의 경우 여기 이곳의 입장권으로 클럽데이까지 즐길수 잇어서 어쩌면 사람들이 금요일로 많이 몰렸을지도...ㅎ

위의 사진은 클럽에서 운영하는 부스다...

홍대 클럽 이십여개와 이번 공연 스폰서인 MLB등 여러 부스가 마련되어 있다..

간간히 클럽부스 앞에서 때로 작은 공연도 하고 따로 디제잉을 하면서 음악을 틀고 춤추는 사람도있었다..

그리고 넬의 공연뒤에 일본에서온 Kyoto jazz massive 팀이 공연을 했다...

오기전에 Skype를 통해 일본인에게 물어봤는데 유명한팀이라고 했다...(어느정도인지는 모르겠음. ^ ^;;)

보컬 두분은 흑인분이셨는데... 쉬지도 않고... 계속노래 부르는데;;;

정말 잘불렀음...;;;;ㅎ

8명으로 구성된 그룹이였는데.. 나중에 한번 음악을 들어봐야겠다고 생각했다...ㅎ

이팀이 공연을 하고있을때.. 뒤에서 공연을 굉장히 즐겁게 즐기고 있는 분들이 계셨는데...

'뭥미~'하고 뒤돌아 보는 순간 윈디시티의 김반장님이 계시더군;;;;;;ㅎㅎㅎ

그리고 집으로 돌아오는 길에 입구에 마련된 클럽스테이지에서는 스키조가 공연을 하고있었다...

무대는 좀 작은 편이였지만, 왠지 더 열광적이고 힘이 넘치는것 같았다는...ㅎ

미리 계획하고 시간을 좀 만들어서 양일간의 공연을 모두 즐길수 있었다면 더 좋았을 듯....

아쉽다 ㅠㅠ 티켓은 양일 권이였는데 ㅠㅠ

이건 그냥....

집에오는길에 맞고를 했는데.. 점수가....후후후

About Englsih study in the Philippines.

Korean people are crazy for studying English, and really eager to be like a native speaker.
Because Korean company requires applicants with good English skill or high English test score.
So, it means if I don't have a good English skill, I can't find any good jobs.
And in Korea, the job relates with social status. So, that's why Korean people are crazy about it.
Some Korean choose a foreign country to study English.
In my case I chose the Philippines. There are several reasons. For this, 1 on 1 class, low price and study condition etc.. Maybe the other student who chose the Philippines for English study has similar reasons like me.
Some students are satisfied, some students are disappointed. Some disappointed students complain that the study conditions are not as good as they expected. And some students say pronunciation is not good or there isn't any curriculum.
I think these are not true. Those things are just excuses to rationalize for their situation that they don't improve.
I lived here in the Philippines for 3 months.
I think if students do their best, they'll get a better result than when they study in other countries.
Because we have more chance to speak English in 1 on 1 class. It is possible that tutors point out mistake directly, and they can correct when students make a mistake.
Pronunciation is no problem.
Korean people are familiar to American English and they think that is original English. It is really wrong. There are so many kinds of English. Even USA has a variety of English style. south and north are different, east and west are also different. White and black people have a little bit different English style.
I heard from somewhere only Korean people consider pronunciation is very very important.
The purpose of language is to communicate with each other.
I have a pronunciation problem. I pronounce differently. So, in my case, it is impossible to communicate with each other. Therefore it is a problem.
Many countries are using English as their first language or second language. And many people are learning English. Now it is an international English, no more American English.
In accordance with former reasons, the Pilippines is good for English study.
But some students say there are limitation to improve their skill. It is the so-called slump. I also experienced it and I don't know whether I already overcome or I am in slump until now.
I just study again and steadily, even though there is no noticeable improvement.
Sometimes I refresh myself by taking trips. I think it is good way to overcome slump.
Learning language, like English, is impossible to learn for short period. It is depended in student's attitude.
I think the Pilippines is a good place to study English.
I am satisfied with most things except that there are so many Koreans in the dormitory.... ^ ^;;;
