Dancing in Point Clouds: unnamed soundsculpture, Making Of, and Human Element [Kinect]

Like an animated equivalent of the Transporter on Star Trek, depth-sensing cameras and custom code can transform the human body into 22,000 points, then back again into something our mind again imagines as flesh and alive, even in abstraction. In “unnamed soundsculpture,” by Cedric Kiefer (onformative) and Daniel Franke (wearechopchop), the body takes on a new meaning in movement, a cloud of points, choreographed.

The making-of video itself tells a kind of story: first seeing choreographer/dancer Laura Keil and her ability to animate her own, human body live, then seeing that dance as data in three dimensions, rendered via a variety of tests before settling on the final form. The music, Kreukeltape by Machinenfabriek, produces its own space, crackling and hollow.

We had a system of 3 [Microsoft] Kinects that recorded the point cloud data that was later combined in another custom-written application that was able to sync all three point clouds into one large file and export it into a file format that is readable by Krakatoa, a particle simulation plugin for 3d Studio Max.

From there, we added the particles, the camera movement that was also controlled by the audio and did a lot of post in [Adobe] After Effects in the end.

The dancer was Laura Keil, a fantastic dancer from Berlin; you’ll find some of her other performances on Vimeo, as well.

Working with a dancer was an important part of the concept for us. Speaking for myself, I thought it was pretty important not always to work with digital data, turning sound directly into visuals, but to bring back the human
influence, her interpretation of what the sound feels like for her. She didn’t rehearse the performance but started to move and perform the very first moment she heard the sound. So everything that was happening, all the little mistakes, or delays of her movement — all are intended, and are part of the overall look and feel, [just as] the little noise that is created by the Kinect data that we recorded. To emphasize that and transport the idea visually, we finally chosen the rough, and noisy, grainy look that you see in the end.

I was curious about live performance, too; while this system is incapable of that, says Cedric, the idea holds some interest. I hope we’ll examine live possibilities with Kinect (and OpenNI, generally) soon.

The video has gone on to earn a nomination for Germany’s MuVi Award for music videos.

Okay, great: you can project on facades and surfaces in ways that makes the image tailor-mapped to the surface. What else can you do?

Rafal Bielski and a small team from Poland provide a glimpse of a more awesome, more futuristic future. Here, projection mapping isn’t content with a still, static surface, like a building. The surface and the projection can both move, aided by robotic servos. As that image tracks the object, the combined project comes further to the dream of transforming the physical reality around us with digital visuals.

How cool is this? Well, for starters, that video above is not something done in post. It’s not a special effect. It’s live, real-time projection you’re watching – really. (No one hiding behind the curtain, either.)

Rafal explains that the result is “a combination of interactive real-time 3D projection, robotics and augmented reality.”:

MPS is the realization of an idea of pushing projection mapping one step forward, making it even more spectacular and involving. In short, we have synchronized rotation of stepped motor engine with “geometric” projection with respect to the position of the viewer. This is the moment where we get the spectator to “believe” that this is a metallic, weird box rotating in a front of the window of the skyscraper. It was shocking to me when I made a very first panel to show our friends that Vimeo flick. Most of them — like 80% — thought it was all post-production, a 3d animation (the industry three of us have come from) and Arek Rekita is just keyed-in there. So imagine the
sensation when you are actually standing in front of it. Its physical form there is real, and I think you can sense those qualities even through the computer’s screen.

The ability to visually influence human beings is weakening. We are getting more and more resistant to that form of communication. (When was the last time you heard heard that a movie had “good CG FC, really, go see it”?) In the film industry, I hope we are getting back to the era of a good script over spectacular effects, but in advertising, there is a whole new world coming in. I could rant about it for hours, so lets get back to MPS. The upper projection surface part is a 50 kg vinyl polymer structure, reaching 3.5 m in height. The base is a custom-made device from certified components, mainly stepper motor connected and controlled via Arduino.

The PC has twin GeForce cards driving three projectors – Benq W1100 and wide-lens Mitsubishi 230u-st. That worked well, but the system also worked with Christie Roadster monsters not in this video. Of course, we went for Derivative TouchDesigner as our interactive visual programming environment. It was a spectacular
learning process, adapting third-party libraries, synchronizing devices, and writing tools to quicken calibration processes. Yeah, we developed our own calibration software: it’s a semi-automatic little tool with live quality. We are going to introduce it on our Facebook profile soon. Stay tuned.

More is coming, too. Rafal tells CDM, “in the near future, we will presents our in-house software for semiautomatic projector/3d calibration and others.” Yes. We’ll look forward to that.

Il 10 giugno 2011, un'eccitante unione tra tecnologia ed arte è stata svelata a Firenze, all'esibizione ANTIconforme di Rabarama.

Attraverso l'uso di innovative tecniche di 3D mapping, proiezioni a 360° e grafica 3D, lo studio di produzione 3D DrawLight (http://www.drawlight.net) e l'artista Rabarama hanno dato una nuova vita alla famosa scultura 'Bozzolo'.

L'installazione può essere visitata fino al 30 Settembre 2011 (Complesso "Le Pagliere", via Machiavelli, Firenze).

On the 10th of June 2011, an exciting new merge between technology and art was unveiled in Florence at the ANTIconforme exhibition.
Using state of the art 3D mapping, 360 projection and tailored graphics, production studio DrawLight and the renowned artist Rabarama have given a new lease of life to her famous sculpture 'Bozzolo'.

The art installation can be viewed until September 30th 2011 ("Le Pagliere" Complex, via Machiavelli, Florence).

Electronic musicians have known for some time that the ability to get hands-on control can make something feel live – and alive. It’s just as true for real-time control of animation. At last, animation is getting that real-time, performative feel in the newest generation of software.

For fans of the 3D tool Cinema4D, that makes the arrival of OSC big news. (OSC stands for Open Sound Control, though here, that’s a misnomer – sound doesn’t need to be involved.) With the Camera GripTools OSC XTension now available, you can open up this production powerhouse to input from iOS and Android touch apps, monome hardware, other applications (visual and musical), sensors, or really anything else you can find that supports OSC. (The vendor also makes HID and joystick add-ons.)

I could talk about what this means, but it’s best to see it in action: have a look at the demo video above, and setup how-to below. It’s especially nice seeing the possibilities of OSC Physics or the audiovisual experience of the lovely Musix, two nice iPad apps.

Provided you have a copy of Cinema4D, you can also try it out yourself, free. The demo version still supports a couple of OSC buttons and three axes. If you’ll like it, you’ll want the full version with lots of controls and keyframe recording. That’s US$199, Mac only. (There are MIDI, HID, and joystick add-ons, too, for less – and with Windows support – which also look like fun.)

Imogen Heap And The Earth Day Sound-Sculpting Spectacular

When it comes to a live show, UK pop artist Imogen Heap doesn’t know how to think small. Each performance is an experiment in seamless shaping of live sound backed by dozens of tech teams. While Heap’s music in and of itself has earned her a Grammy Award and legions of followers over her decade plus-long career, in recent years she has also become more of a living technological spectacle—or, an ever-evolving live music robot.

Her most famous invention, “The Gloves,” allow Heap to record, loop, and filter sound in tens of thousands different combinations on the spot, creating entire tracks through the flick of a finger or the clench of a fist. Aided by positional and acceleration sensor elements and microphones, The Gloves spurred intense media interest in 2011, and made for a stunning TED video (below) in which Heap gestured her way into a fully-realized, impromptu vocal track.

Now reflecting on a career obsessively bound with technology, Heap realizes how much such spectacles can wreak havoc on the planet. And it’s with her uncanny drive (and admittedly spendthrift ways) that she plans to confront the issue. On Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd), Heap will host a live event stocked with unprecedented audio-visual theatrics. At once a concert, a track recording, and a film screening, the extravaganza and a live video shoot will take place in Heap’s own backgarden, and will be fueled in part by a few alternative energy sources—bio diesel, solar power, and bicycles.

Around 25 cyclists—composed of friends, family, and members of The Gloves’ ample tech team—will consistently pedal throughout the concert, charging batteries that convert into about 2.5 kilowatts of power. There will also be 10 solar panels fueling solar generators during the daytime, which will produce about 1 kilowatt of energy—according to a member of her Heap’s tech team. Barring mishap, it should cleanly power the event lighting, though, she’ll have a team of energy experts—and, okay, a backup generator—to come to the rescue if need be.

“I wanted to do this to spark the conversation and to keep it going, and to teach myself about alternative, clean sources of energy,” Heap tells us. “And I thought powering it off the grid with bicycles would be fun.”

But the bike power—which is simply an existing method used on a grand scale—is just one component of an ambitious evening budgeting in “not over $100,000, but not far from it,” as Imogen cautiously put it. Under a geodesic dome behind her Essex home, the event will play host to Heap’s crowd-sourced, originally scored nature film Love the Earth. Then, there’s the main attraction—the live concert recording of a track, Heap-style.

The Gloves will essentially play music producer and 3D projector throughout the concert. Armed with a new, gesture-mapping interface, Heap will compose a pre-rehearsed track through The Gloves, and, here’s a highlight: Kinect technology will make it appear as if visuals are growing from her hands.

The event will be filmed and livestreamed, and the recorded track will be used, as is, on her ongoing album Heapsongs. The performance will be silent so as to optimize recording (and to keep her neighbors happy), so headphones will be provided. Then naturally, there are the art installations and laser torches. The list goes on.

“It’s terrifying,” says Heap, who is directing the entire lot. “It’s just strange designing a shoot for something that doesn’t yet exist, knowing very clearly what I want to convey… I’m definitely multitasking.”

What drives Heap is the future of alternative energy, but moreover, she hopes to improve upon The Gloves as an agent of visual sound-sculpting.

“What I want is for the audience to be able to physically see the sound,” she says. “While I wear The Gloves I’m intuitively choosing effects and changing the sound in a way that makes sense. So if I move my arm out, my sound gets bigger, or if I move it up you expect the piece to move into higher notes… there are things that are just inherent in The Gloves that you can’t use with a piano, or cello. I don’t want it to be a second rate keyboard.”

For Heap (a seasoned cellist and pianist, by the way), all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Earth Day isn’t just a one-off gimmick. For an illustrious career spanning almost four solo albums, collaborations with the likes of Bon Jovi, Britney Spears, and Deadmau5, and track appearances on SNL and CSI, gimmicks aren’t necessary. Rather, the technology is deeply personal, and part of Heap’s identity as an artist(/robot).

“I’m doing it right now, as I speak, in order to express myself,” she said. “I’m moving my hands. I use a lot of gestures, and I just love the idea that the body becomes an instrument…. when I’ve got The Gloves on, everything makes sense.”

The visual live sculpting of the Earth Day show also extends to the bicycles; the audience will see the event lights waning and increasing in strength, depending on how fast the cyclists are pedaling. It’s rather Viking-esque, and failure (God forbid) can only result in an artful setback. Or at worst, a light-induced seizure.

Overall, the Earth Day event sounds like the perfect mind-blowing debut for Heap’s latest innovations, not to mention the premiere of new movie and new song. That it’s for a good cause won’t weigh heavily on the entertainment factor that Heap is renowned for, but you can certainly watch the spectacular livestream on Earth Day with a sense of moral superiority.

We are very proud to bring to you a whole new batch of projection-mapping videos as part of our collaboration on the ongoing Marshmallow Laser Feast projects.

This time it was a project for Studio Output and their client Sony Playstation.

We wanted to push video mapping on from anything that has been done so far. Using live puppetry, 3D tracking, pyrotechnics (and a whole bunch of our friends' spare time) we transformed a room into three different vignettes. Can you guess the films?!

It was all lots of fun! A very big thank you to all our friends and Studio-Output for their support and putting their trust into our maverick efforts!

Part 1 of 3

Using bone system basics, learn how to create a character skeleton that can be rigged and animated. This tutorial focuses on getting started using bone systems and creating the legs of the model. These tutorials work with the Rigging tutorials on my channel as well. It's easier to work with your bone systems when the rigging system fits the skeleton. Many rigs are bone dependent, so making sure they work together is key.

The YeahJustThere App was originally rejected by Apple in Dec 2011, but we carried on with the animation so we could contribute to the celebrations in some way. Luckily the app was re-submitted and accepted at the start of April - so happy days.

처음 디스트릭트에서 최은석(Chey) 대표님과의 만남이 기억납니다.
영상팀을 만들어 보겠다라고 하며 앉혀 놓고 작지만 큰 포부를 보여주셨던 대표님
대표님의 말씀속에 들어있던 큰 포부가 저에게 큰 힘이 되었습니다.
둘이 있을 땐 안부와 고민을 묻고 들어주셨고 격려도 잊지 않으셨던 것 같습니다.
처음 홀로그램을 완성시켰을때 그리고 업그레이드되던 모습을 보며 앞으로의 포부를 내비치시던 모습이 생각이 나네요
어느 순간부터 내 마음을 잡지 못해 미워하고 욕을 했어도
존경하는 마음은 한결 같았다는 것 알아주셨으면 합니다.
그렇게 말씀을 못드리고 멀리 떠나 보내 드려 정말 죄송합니다.

어디서 보시든
대표님과 하께 했던 시간,
대표님의 생각,
대표님이 주셨던 용기
들을 기억하며 열심히 완성해 나가겠습니다.

비록 이제는 같이 하지 못하겠지만 언제나 저의 스승이셨습니다.
