So I was in the car the other day, pulled over at the curb in Shinchon, waiting for my friend who got off to quickly buy a snack, when I saw a large commercial in the window of a cell phone shop.

It read: “Our prices are even lower than those of American beef”…

I don’t know, is it just me or is this a pretty unexpected advertising slogan for a cell phone dealer?

While I won’t write too much about it now, I just can’t help wondering what SK Telecom’s intentions were.

I mean, if all they wanted to get across is that their phones are really cheap, I am sure they could have found a million other products. How about our phones are cheaper than a bowl of rice? A bottle of soju? A subway ticket?

Yes, I know…all boring.

So I guess SK wanted to spice up things here by adding a little bit of nationalism to their campaign (obviously this commercial implies the foreign product to be relatively cheap compared with the “superior” domestic alternative) or simply take a stab at the Americans (doesn’t it feel good to do that once in a while?).

But maybe the joke’s on SK. At least from a point of view of logics.

First of all, at the risk of sounding overly nitpicky, I would argue that the commercial is factually wrong. Um, basically they’re saying that their phones are cheaper than US beef. Really? Are they? On what basis? Per serving size? Most certainly not. Per gram? Nope. So at least on that level it sounds like a lie. That’s a great way to build customer loyalty- lie to them in your marketing promises. Oh, what’s that? Not per gram? Ok, per what then…the entire cow? Yeah, right that’s a currency most consumers are familiar thinking in. Same like when you go to Hyundai department store to by a pair of jeans and check the price tag, it says: two chickens and a donkey.

But let’s not be too pedantic and just say for the sake of argument that 150g of US beef cost indeed more than 150g of an SK phone. That would mean these phones are really cheap in Korea since American beef is pretty inexpensive here. But is that the only attribute people associate with US beef in Korea? Let me give you a hint: candle light protests. Yeah right, US beef is also a safety hazard. It is even so dangerous that the mere idea of having it on the market caused mass hysteria.

I really wonder if that is the type of connection SK was going for. Along the lines of, look here, our products are cheap but they are also cheap for a reason..they are not only of lower quality than alternative offers but might potentially even be dangerous for you!

Now that’s smart advertising~ >..<

며칠 전에 신촌 길가에 차를 세워두고, 잠시 간식을 사러 나간 친구를 기다리다가 휴대폰 가게 윈도에 커다랗게 붙여진 광고를 보게 됐어요.

거기엔 이렇게 써져 있었죠: "미국산 소고기보다 싼 집"...

글쎄요, 휴대폰 판매 광고로는 참 예상 밖의 슬로건이 아닌가요, 아니면 제 생각만 그런가요?

그다지 많은 말을 쓰지는 않겠지만서도, 여기서 SK 텔레콤의 의도가 뭐였는지는 참 궁금해요.

그저 그 가게의 휴대폰이 정말 싸다는 말을 하고 싶었던 거라면, 비교할 만한 다른 제품들을 백만 개는 찾을 수 있었을 것 같죠. 공기밥보다 휴대폰이 싼 집은 어때요? 소주 한 병이나? 지하철 표는요?

그래요, 뭐...다 참신하진 않아요.

그러니 SK에서는 광고에 약간의 애국심을 가미하거나(이 광고에서 외국 제품은 "월등한" 국내 제품에 비해 비교적 싸다는 말을 내포하고 있으니까요) 혹은 그저 미국제품을 찔러보고(가끔씩 한 번 하면 재밌잖아요?) 좀 더 재밌게 만들려고 한 것 같네요.

하지만 여기서 우스워지는 건 SK쪽이네요. 적어도 논리적으로 보면요.

첫째, 너무 깐깐하게 들릴 수도 있지만, 저는 이 광고가 생각해요. 음, 결국 여기서 하는 말은 자기네 휴대폰이 미국 소고기보다 싸다는 거죠. 하지만 그런가요? 정말로? 어떤 기준이죠? 1인분 기준? 아닌 것 같은데요. 그럼 그램수? 아니죠. 그러니 그런면에서 보면 더 싸다는 말은 거짓말인 것 같네요. 소비자의 믿음을 사는 아주 좋은 방법이네요- 마케팅 공약에서 거짓말 하기요. 오, 그게 무슨 말이죠? 그램당이 아니라고요? 그럼 어떻게 더 싸다는거죠...한 마리 소보다 싸다는 건가요? 그래요, 그게 바로 대부분의 소비자들이 익숙해하는 계산방법이겠죠. 청바지를 사러 현대백화점에 가면 가격표가 이런 거 다 아시잖아요: 닭 두마리에 당나귀 한 마리.

하지만 너무 젠체는 하지 말고 그저 의견을 완성하기 위해 150g의 미국 소고기가 150g의 SK 휴대폰보다 정말로 싸다고 해보죠. 그 말은 미국 소고기가 엄청 싸기 때문에 한국 휴대폰도 엄청 싸다는 말이 되겠죠. 하지만 그게 한국인들이 미국 소고기 하면 떠올리는 유일한 이미지일까요? 힌트 하나 드릴게요: 촛불 시위. 맞아요, 미국 소고기는 또한 안전하지 않다는 이미지이죠. 위험하기까지 해서 시장에 들여오는 것 만으로도 집단 히스테리를 일으켰었죠.

그렇게 따지면 그게 SK가 원하던 이미지 연상인지 정말 궁금해요. 이런 말이랄까요, 여기 보세요, 우리 제품은 싸지만 싼데는 이유가 있다고요..다른 제품들보다 질이 떨어질 뿐 아니라 위험할 가능성까지 있답니다!

참 똑똑한 광고이죠~ >..<

가엾은 앨리 입원했어요 Poor Ally hospitalized

Since I just did a short update on Yoobin the other day, I thought it might be time to say a few things about Ally as well- after all, it’s been a while since I last reported about her.

Unfortunately the news that I have is not that great, as she is currently hospitalized.

She took ill some days ago and couldn’t keep her food down. She vomited after every meal and was consequently not only extremely weak, but also required an infusion at one point to fight dehydration.

Although she could go back home after that, even with special food her condition didn’t change and as the vomiting continued, she had to undergo surgery checking her bowels.

The situation still didn’t improve and so she has had her second surgery last night, this time opening her stomach and she has been in the hospital almost a full week now.

As far as the vet said, she is doing fine at the moment, but needs further observation.

The whole thing has been rather upsetting and frankly speaking, seeing her at the pet hospital was very unpleasant. She was extremely lonely and sad and I could hear her crying as soon as I came in the door of the shop. The holding cages are very small and made from nothing but metal and it must be painfully boring for such an intelligent mammal to be confined there.

When I finally got to see her, she instantly calmed down and then fell asleep on the hand that I had squeezed in between the narrow bars of the cage.. m.m

며칠 전에 짧게 유빈이 근황을 올렸으니 앨리 얘기도 좀 해볼게요- 앨리 소식 쓴지도 꽤 오래된것 같고 하니까요.

불행히도 별로 좋지 않은 소식이네요, 앨리는 지금 입원해 있거든요.

앨리가 며칠전부터 아파서 음식을 소화시키지 못했어요. 밥을 먹기만 하면 토해서 몸이 아주 약해지고 탈수가 심해서 나중엔 정맥주사도 맞아야 했죠.

그 다음엔 집에 왔는데, 특식을 줘도 상태가 나아지지 않고 계속 구토를 해서 수술을 해서 장을 체크했어요.

그래도 상태가 나아지지 않아서 어젯밤에 두 번째 수술을 받아서 위를 열어봤어요, 이제 앨리가 병원에 있은지 거의 일주일이 다되었네요.

수의사님의 말로는 이제 괜찮다고 하지만, 더 관찰이 필요하다네요.

상황이 참 당황스럽기도 하고, 솔직히 앨리가 병원에 있는 걸 보는 기분이 굉장히 별로였어요. 아주 외롭고 슬퍼 보였고 병원에 들어가자마자 앨리가 우는 소리가 들렸으니까요. 우리는 아주 작고 금속으로만 되어 있어서 안에 갇혀있는 앨리같이 똑똑한 포유동물에겐 괴로울 정도로 무미건조할 거예요.

마침내 보러 갔더니 앨리는 바로 진정해서 좁은 철창 사이로 비집어 넣은 제 손 위에서 잠이 들어 버렸어요.. ㅠ.ㅠ

Korean Honorifics From Foreign Viewpoint

This article is a loose follow-up to my opinion piece on the much criticized remarks of a 39-year-old Korean judge, which was published in The Korea Times on Feb. 28.

Let me begin with this question: Is the problem of finding the right, appropriately polite, words limited to Korea?

Talking to many Koreans or at least, when following the often more than a little biased reports in the mainstream media, one is easily led to believe so. I frequently hear Korean people around me say that one reason why their language is so hard to learn for foreigners is because of its use of honorific, or polite, speech.

This argument is so common that even a recent article on the decrease in the use of honorific forms in Korean opened with this point. As a student of the Korean language myself, I really can't help wondering, why this is such a tenacious impression, especially since in essence it is rather false, or at least largely negligible.

Yes, Korean is a hard language for foreigners to learn, but why would the fact that it makes use of honorific forms make it so much harder? If you already have to memorize thousands of words, memorizing maybe 20 or so more for the most common special words, such as ``daek" instead of ``jib" for house or ``jinji" (not ``bab") for meal, is really not your main worry. The same is the case for different verb conjugations. In fact, using the polite ending ``-mnida" is often easier than the ``banmal" (informal) version.

While I might be over-simplifying here, my initial point was that the problem is negligible; after all, there are probably few Koreans that would make a scene if a foreigner were to use the wrong level of politeness.

Moreover, the concept of having a polite way of speaking is, at least to many with a European background, rather familiar. German has it; French has it, too. Both of them include special pronouns as well as different verb conjugations. Of course, Japanese has an even richer system of honorific expressions than Korean (and even makes distinctions according to gender). So, there really isn't much that's special about Korean at all in this respect.

In fact even English, which is often used as a yardstick in Korea, has such distinctions, though it might be a little too subtle for some English-language learners to grasp.

George Carlin made this point rather brilliantly in one of his acts, dissecting the increasing fascination in especially American English with ``softening" euphemisms. Grandfathers, for instance, usually ``pass away" in the language of many Americans today, rather than ``die." Not knowing which expression is appropriate and ``politically correct" in a given situation can quickly sound rather rude to many native speakers.

Take the word ``cripple" for instance. While you can find it in the Bible, it would be unacceptable to use in reference to anyone today. Instead, we have words and phrases such as special-needs, handicapped, challenged, impaired, differently-abled and, the most widely used, disabled. There are countless more examples such as occasional irregularity (constipation), health care professional (doctor), negative cash-flow position (broke), economically disadvantaged (poor), substandard housing in the inner cities (slums), or even neutralize or depopulate (kill), all used for otherwise unpleasant things we don't speak about so openly. While some of these are a bit tongue-in-cheek, such a trend clearly exists and must make English harder to learn and use appropriately for non-native speakers.

As a closing point to consider the value of the wide use of formal speech in Korean, let me add a story regarding Korean Air discussed among others by Malcolm Gladwell in his book ``Outliers." Korean Air had in the 1990s become one of the world's most dangerous airlines, with so many crashes that it was eventually excluded from its airline alliance.

The management of Korean Air at that time brought in an American team of consultants to analyze the problem and recommend a solution. While the Korean management had suggested more mandatory hours of flight simulator training for all pilots, the Americans advised them to introduce English as the official on-board language and ban the use of any Korean communication from the cockpit. Korean Air went ahead with this solution and as a result the crashes ceased, the airline's reputation was restored and it became an alliance member again. The consultants had discovered that the reason for the numerous accidents was that co-pilots could not inform captains about mistakes or potentially dangerous situations, because they had to use the most formal style of speech when addressing the captain and this created a barrier, which made criticism almost impossible. Once they used English, this ``artificial wall" was torn down and teamwork and cross-checks became easy.

Goodbye Yoobini- hello Sheepini!

Summer sure has come to Korea at long last and within the past couple of days the temperatures have soared. My room has turned from a deep freezer (remember the story of my broken boiler..) to a sauna.

While it’s easy for me to just wear a t-shirt now and shorts too cool off, Yoobin doesn’t have that option and with his thick fur he really didn’t seem fit for summer.

So I thought I’d try something new and gave him a little hair cut! ^.,^

As always it was really easy working with him because he is extremely cooperative- a real team player~ ^^*

Anyway, without furtherer due then, here some pictures of short haired sheepy Yobin~

I think it’s turned out quite ok for a first try and for having been cut free hand with a pair of scissors!

지난 며칠 새 드디어 진짜 여름이 와버려서 기온이 치솟았죠. 제 방은 냉동실에서(고장난 보일러 얘기 기억하시나요..) 사우나로 변했어요.

저는 시원하게 티셔츠를 입고 반바지를 입으면 되지만, 유빈이는 그럴 수가 없는데 두꺼운 털이 여름엔 잘 안 맞잖아요.

그래서 새로운 시도를 해봐야겠다고 마음 먹고 유빈이 털을 좀 잘라줬어요! ^.,^

항상 그렇듯 유빈이가 정말 얌전히 있어줘서 쉽게 했답니다- 유빈이는 팀 플레이어~ ^^*

어쨌든 긴말 필요 없이 여기 짧은 털의 양같은 유빈이 사진이예요~

처음 치고는, 또 가위 하나로 그냥 자른 것 치고는 꽤 잘 자른 것 같아요!

Drunken Rice at McKorea

Let me just briefly pick up on a few recent comments here lately, concerning the news about nicknaming the Korean rice wine Makgeolli, “Drunken Rice” .

What can I say…It is pretty awful that is clear. I don’t even want to go into negative connotations the word “drunken” evokes as other bloggers have, instead I will simply say that it is just rather embarrassing.

But if that one was the best they could come up, how bad must the other suggestions have been.

Well, let’s see. The next most popular ones were Makcohol and Markelixir. The former supposedly being a combination of the word makgoelli and alcohol (that’s about as necessary as saying galbi-meat) and the latter of maRkgeolli (??) and..ah who cares..

Yes, these are even worse than the winner, but still better than what followed close behind. How about “McKorea”? (Seriously, they cited that one as a close runner up)..talk about embarrassing.. >..,

But there is a silver lining to this little tale.

Thank god, according to more recent articles (for instance this one in the JoongAnd Daily), even the Korean government has eventually come to its senses and is after all not promoting the name.

Good to know though that they spend the tax money on the advisory board and the survey in 11 countries all across the globe (which by the way and not at all surprisingly all concluded that if at all, Korean rice wine would be the best nickname for Makgeolli..).

I really wonder how long it will take before the Korean government (and unfortunately also many domestic companies) understand that it might be a good idea to actually include at least one foreigner on every panel that is coming up with English terms for products that are explicitly meant to be bought by foreigners. >..<

한국 막걸리에 "Drunken Rice"라는 닉네임을 붙이기로 한 뉴스에 관해서 최근 블로그에 올라왔던 댓글에 대해 간단히 얘기해 볼게요.
뭐라고 할까...참 별로인 것만은 확실하죠. 다른 블로거들처럼 "drunken"이라는 단어가 불러일으키는 부정적인 이미지에 대해서는 말하고 싶지도 않으니까, 대신 그냥 쪽팔리는 이름이라는 말만 하려고요.

하지만 그게 그 사람들이 생각할 수 있었던 최고의 이름이었다면, 다른 후보들은 얼마나 끔찍했던 걸까요.

음, 그럼 볼까요. 그 다음으로 인기 있었던 이름은 Makcohol이랑 Markelixir이었대요. 처음 것은 아마 막걸리와 alcohol을 합친 거겠고(갈비-meat이란 이름을 만드는 것만큼 불필요한 이름이네요) 그 다음 maRkgeoli (??)는...아 누가 알겠어요..

그렇죠, 1등한 것보다 더 심하죠, 하지만 바로 다음 순위에 온 이름보단 그래도 나아요. "McKorea"는 어떠신가요? (진짜로 이게 막강한 우승후보였다니요)..정말 창피해요.. >.,<

하지만 이 사소한 이야기에도 작은 희망은 있답니다.

다행히도 더 최근의 기사에 따르면(중앙 데일리 기사), 한국 정부조차 결국 정신을 차리고 이 이름을 선전하지 않기로 했다네요.

하지만 이 이름 때문에 세금을 써서 자문기관에 문의하고 전 세계 11개국에 가서 설문조사를 했다니 참(그런데 놀랍지도 않은 사실은 설문 조사 결과가 모두 꼭 막걸리의 닉네임을 지어야 한다면 Korean rice wine이 제일 낫겠다는 것이었다고 하죠).

한국 정부에서(또한 불행히도 많은 국내 회사에서도) 특히 외국인들을 대상으로 한 제품에 관련해서 영어를 써야할 때는 적어도 외국인 한 명 정도는 심사에 포함시키는 것이 좋다는 걸 알기까지 얼마나 더 오래 걸릴지 정말 궁금하네요. >..<

Branding Korea- Why bother and are we on the right way?

Over the recent past, passing by countless advertising boards in subways stations and other places in Seoul, a certain marketing oddity has started to force itself into my consciousness: the attempt of local cities in Korea at branding themselves through the use of tiniest English catch phrases.

At first I thought it were only a few over-ambitious municipalities that had adopted this idea, but out of curiosity I checked on the internet and noticed with sufficient surprise that in fact virtually every Korean city now has such a slogan!

Isn’t that alone reason enough to talk about it a bit? ^.,^

I will organize this article roughly into two segments. The first one is the “why bother” or why it could be worthwhile to brand Korea as a country part and the second part is about whether current government efforts are likely to be of value.

Generally speaking, why is branding important? Branding has received a lot of spotlight in the business world over the last few decades and I would say justifiably so. Strong brands have a explicit value for companies since they allow to differentiate products from the offers of the competition and to charge higher prices.

Similarly, countries compete regionally and globally for customers, namely tourists and investors. In that sense a strong Korea brand will lead to higher income in the tourism sector and foreign investment. Also, a better image of Korea will increase the value of goods produced in Korea, resulting in greater exports.

Interestingly the present state of exactly that last point can be used as an indicator of how relatively weak the brand Korea actually is. Although Samsung and LG are very successful overseas with consumer electronics, they brand themselves in these markets as “global” and not Korean brands. Apparently, the concept “made in Korea” does not add any value to their cell phones sold abroad. As a result, many Westerners know the products of these companies but are not aware that they are from Korea. (Looking at Sony the picture would be drastically different since the company uses the “made in Japan” brand as a quality sign.)

Another example would be the generally positive image of German products abroad (and that despite the horrors of two world wars, I might add).

So why should we bother? Well, looking at such clear economic benefits of a successful country brand I guess it’s only logical to care.

Therefore let’s move on to the question of whether our current branding efforts are appropriate.

First let’s look at what good branding is about in general and then let’s see what is being done in Korea right now!

Creating a successful brand requires probably a mix of at least the following three things: the right message, consistency and time.

With the right message I mean that brands should communicate certain characteristics about a country. These not only have to be positive in the eyes of the consumers, they also have to be two other very important things: distinct and true. Advertised characteristics have to be somewhat unique or differentiated from those of other countries. And since brand value is based on reputation, which is closely related to being trustful, the message should indeed be true. One could argue that it makes sense for example to brand Swiss watches as high in quality but maybe not as the most affordable ones. Would most international consumers find that true for Chinese watches as well?

Consistency means that once a set of characteristics has been identified, it has to be communicated steadily- so to speak a country has to show one face to the outside world. Let me give one example of a successful brand based on consistency. If you think of Lufthansa, Europe’s largest airline, what comes to your mind first? Great food? Cheap flights? Pretty flight attendants? Maybe not…probably more something along the lines of “safe or reliable”. In fact, Lufthansa is best known for its safety standards based on a history of merely 4 crashes since its foundation over 80 years ago.

Now, how about Korean air? If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have said “risky but great catering” (considering that Korean Air was indeed one of the most dangerous airlines around, with 5 crashes just between ’97 and ’99 and was suspended from its alliance with other global airlines). By today however, the number of disasters has drastically dropped and the airline is again member of SkyTeam, the second largest alliance of airlines, and I believe the brand characteristics have changed just as much since then.

Time lastly is important since it often takes years to imprint a message into the mind on such a deep level that whenever the word “Korea” comes up a person associates it automatically with those characteristics underlying the branding strategy. However, reputation and brands are built over years but they can potentially be ruined in the shortest time.

Now let’s turn to some of the current branding efforts in Korea. As noted at the beginning of this article pretty much every city has their own slogan, so let me just give you a rather random selection here with a short personal comment in brackets:

- hi seoul (reminds me always of hello kitty!)

- ulsan for you (sounds like a dating page)

- global inspiration gyeongi-do (come on! are we delusional enough already??)

- big chungbuk (well, I guess if there is nothing more to say about chungbuk than that it’s big, then I’m not really motivated to go there)

- it's daejoen (it’s not a good slogan)

- island of world peace jeju (Really? “World” peace? Jeju defies the laws of time and space…how can world peace even be achieved in just one place?)

- let's goyang (let’s please first learn English and not put nouns after the phrase “let us”)

- city of masters ansung (really corny one, kind of like masters of the universe, the show from the 80s~)

the last one sort of brings me to this little family of slogans consisting of expressions that were popular when I was in elementary school in 80’s:

- wow siheung

- yes! Uiwang

- ace yong-in

- super pyeongtaek

- best gimpo

- viva boryeong

and I will end with this somewhat displaced oddity that I find strangely funny:

- aha! suncheon (>_<)

First of all I think that I am bothered by the sheer number of city slogans. Does it really matter to a foreigner that Ulsan has a slogan now? Is it necessary to go into such extremes of what I would call micro-branding? And as an even more important criticism I think I have to break the news, these slogans are not very good. They don’t really convey anything unique and they don’t really affect my perception. Could you imagine a foreigner seeing the slogan ‘nice jechon’ and then saying to himself: “wow, that sounds…um…nice, so I guess I should make a trip to Jechon before my return flight next week~”.

Well, let me make my assessment short and less painful, in terms of branding these attempts are not very glorious. None of them seems to convey anything special to me at all and those that do convey a certain meaning make an awkwardly funny impression.

Branding is about more than a catchy slogan. It is a comprehensive strategy based on the understanding of what a county is and what it is not and how people from the outside perceive it.

And I guess I would give the same verdict for the until recently used county slogan “Korea, Sparkling”, which has taken the place of “Dynamic Korea” (which as one journalist speculated was discontinued because it sounded too much like a copy of the earlier “Amazing Thailand” and “Incredible India”). I believe that Korea might be considered sparkling in terms of its neon light nights, its glittery pop culture and flashy fashion accessories. But when it comes to the connotation of sparkling as in “new and clean” I don’t see that so much. As of 2010 however, Korea has yet again a new slogan, the third in less than 5 years. But other than that “Korea, Be inspired”, doesn’t bring much change…at least in terms of branding power. I might be wrong, but my hunch is that the slogan was picked like its two predecessors and the countless city slogans: just something that somewhat sounds cool in English (didn’t “dynamic” also sound cool?) but there is nothing more to it. And this I would guess will prove its greatest weakness eventually.

In closing, I would like to say that my conclusion about why we should bother branding Korea, namely because it has economic benefit is only half the story.

Actually, there is more to it, at least on a somewhat emotional level.

Let me put it this way, if you would ask a representative sample of Westerners what their perception of Korea is, you might be displeased to hear what their first associations are. Usually, what comes to their mind first are issues around North Korea, flying chairs in the Korean parliament, the fall of companies such as Daewoo (yes, I am aware this is an old story- but it seems to have stuck), or maybe on the upside the World Cup…yet even that one you get served with a side dish of “but wasn’t it crazy how people went nuts over a mere soccer tournament?” >..<

Considering that at least to me, Korea is much more than that and foremost, much better things, I am concerned in a personal sense with the topic of branding the country. I think we should indeed bother about branding Korea as something else than the aforementioned.

Outlook: I might soon write some more on this topic, getting more concrete about what could be some positive and unique points about Korea that should be highlighted by a branding strategy. While I don’t want to give too much away just now, I would probably try promote Korea’s one-of-kind success story as a country and economy more (what comes to mind are impressive GDP growth, world leading industries in shipbuilding, semi conductors, cars and consumer electronics after less than 50 years of industrialization), but stay tuned for more.

최근 얼마간 지하철 역사와 서울 곳곳의 광고판을 지나치면서 특정 광고의 이상한 점이 제 의식 속에 자리잡기 시작했습니다: 짧은 영어 캐치 프레이즈를 써서 도시 홍보를 하려는 한국 지방 도시들의 광고였지요.

처음엔 몇몇 야망 넘치는 지자체들만이 하는 줄 알았는데, 호기심에 인터넷을 뒤져본 결과 사실 실질적으로 모든 한국 도시들이 그런 슬로건을 만들었다는 걸 알고 적잖이 놀라게 되었어요!

그것만으로도 잠시 얘기해볼 이유는 되지 않을까요? ^.,^

이 글은 대충 두 부분으로 구성하려고 합니다. 첫 번째는 "왜 해야만 하나", 혹은 한국이란 국가를 브랜드화 하는 것이 어떻게 가치있는 일이 될 수 있을지에 관한 내용이고, 두 번째 부분은 현 정부의 노력이 과연 그 성과를 거두게 될지에 관한 내용입니다.

일반적으로 상표화(브랜딩)이 중요한 이유는 무엇일까요? 지난 몇 십 년 간 비즈니스 세계에서 브랜딩은 많은 주목을 받아왔는데 거기엔 사실 그럴만한 이유가 있다고 하겠습니다. 강력한 브랜드는 경쟁사의 제품들과 자사의 제품을 차별화시켜 더 높은 가격을 매길 수 있도록 하기 때문에 회사들에겐 명백한 가치를 지니고 있습니다.

비슷한 경우로, 국가들 역시 지역적, 세계적으로 고객들, 이름하여 여행객들과 투자자들을 두고 경쟁을 벌입니다. 그런 의미에서 한국이 뚜렷한 국가 브랜드를 갖게 된다면 관광 분야와 외국인 투자 부문에서 더 높은 수익을 얻을 수 있게 되지요. 또한, 한국의 이미지가 더 좋아지면 한국에서 생산된 제품의 가치도 올라가서, 수출 실적도 더 좋아집니다.

흥미롭게도 바로 그 점에 대한 현재 상황을 보면 한국이란 브랜드가 사실 얼마나 약소한지를 알 수 있는 바로미터가 됩니다. 삼성과 LG는 해외에서도 전자제품으로 아주 성공적인 회사이지만, 두 회사는 해외 시장에서 회사를 한국 브랜드가 아닌 "세계" 브랜드로 선전합니다. "made in Korea"라는 말은 해외에서 팔리는 그들의 휴대폰에 아무런 도움도 되지 않는 것입니다. 그 결과 많은 서양인들이 두 회사의 제품은 알고 있지만 이들이 한국 회사인지는 잘 알지 못합니다. ("made in Japan"이란 브랜드를 품질보증 상표로 쓰는 소니의 경우를 보면 얘기는 완전히 달라집니다.)

또 다른 예로는 보통 독일 제품이 해외 시장에서 갖고 있는 긍정적인 이미지가 있겠네요 (두 번의 끔찍한 세계 대전을 일으켰음에도 말이지요, 라고 덧붙일게요).

왜 귀찮게 신경을 써야 하냐구요? 앞에서 얘기했듯이 브랜딩에 성공한 나라의 명백한 경제적 이득을 생각한다면 당연히 신경을 써야 하는 것이 맞다는 결론이 나지요.

그럼 현재 우리의 브랜딩 전략이 적절한지에 대한 질문으로 넘어가 볼게요.

일단 일반적으로 좋은 브랜딩이 어떤 것인지에 대해 살펴보고 현재 한국에서는 어떤 전략이 쓰이고 있는지를 살펴보지요!

성공적으로 브랜드를 창조해내기 위해서는 아마도 최소한 다음의 세 가지가 모두 필요할 거예요: 알맞는 메시지, 일관성과 시간이예요.

알맞은 메시지란 말은 브랜드가 국가의 어떤 특색들을 잘 전달해야 한다는 말이예요. 이는 고객들의 눈에 긍정적으로 보여야 할 뿐 아니라, 또 다른 두 가지의 아주 중요한 포인트가 있어요: 달라야 하고 진실되어야 해요. 선전되는 특색들은 다른 나라들의 특색과 차별화되거나 독특한 면이 있어야 하죠. 그리고 브랜드 가치는 신뢰와 밀접한 관련이 있는 평판/명성/신망에 기초하기 때문에, 그 메시지 역시 진실이어야 하고요. 예를 들어 스위스 시계는 아마도 저렴한 가격을 선전할 수는 없겠지만, 품질이 좋은 것으로 브랜드화 할 수 있겠죠. 중국 시계를 그렇게 브랜드화 하려고 한다면 세상 사람들이 이를 진실되다고 생각할까요?

일관성이란 특색이 일단 정해졌다면, 그런 특색들이 꾸준히 전달되어야 한다는 말이예요- 말하자면 국가는 바깥 세상에 하나의 얼굴만을 보여야 한다는 것이지요. 일관성으로 브랜드화에 성공한 예를 하나 들어볼게요. 유럽의 가장 큰 항공사인 루프트한자를 생각하면, 제일 먼저 어떤 생각이 떠오르시나요? 맛있는 음식? 아니면 저가의 비행? 예쁜 승무원일까요? 아니죠...그보단 아마도 "안전함과 신뢰성"에 관련된 무언가가 생각날 거예요. 실제로 루프트한자는 80년도 전에 설립된 이래로 오직 4번의 사고만을 낸 역사를 바탕으로 한 안전 기준으로 제일 잘 알려져 있지요. 그럼 대한항공의 경우는 어떨까요? 10년 전에 이 질문을 했다면, "위험하지만 음식은 맛있다"고 대답했을 거예요(실제로 대한항공은 97년에서 99년 사이에만 5번의 사고를 내면서 세계에서 가장 위험한 항공사로 꼽혔었는데, 그 때문에 다른 나라의 항공사들과 맺었던 제휴관계가 한 때 중단되기도 했었죠). 하지만 현재는 사고 수가 극적으로 줄어 다시 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 항공사 동맹, SkyTeam의 멤버로 복귀했고 브랜드 특색도 그 때와는 전혀 다를거예요.

마지막으로 언제든 "한국"이란 단어가 나오면 사람들이 브랜딩 전략의 근본적 특색들과 한국을 자연적으로 연결시키는 정도까지 사람들의 인식 속에 깊게 메시지가 각인이 될 때까진 종종 오랜 시간이 걸리기 때문에 시간도 아주 중요하지요. 하지만 명성과 브랜드를 쌓는데는 몇 년이 걸리는 반면 무너지는 것은 순간일 수 있겠죠.

그럼 이제 한국에서 어떻게 브랜딩을 하고 있는지 몇 가지 살펴볼까요. 글의 첫부분에서도 얘기했듯이 거의 모든 도시가 슬로건을 만들었으니, 여기 몇 가지를 임의로 골라서 몇 가지 종류로 나눠 제 의견을 짧게 얘기하고 지나갈게요:

-         hi seoul (항상 헬로 키티를 떠오르게 해요!)
-         ulsan for you (데이트 사이트 같은 느낌이예요)
-         global inspiration gyeongi-do (이건 좀 아니잖아요! 너무 과장이 심한 것 아닌가요??)
-         big chungbuk (음, 크다는 것 외에 충북에 대해 말할만한 게 없다면, 별로 거기 가보고 싶은 마음이 들지 않는데요)
-         it's daejoen (it’s 별로 좋은 슬로건이 아니네요)
-         island of world peace jeju (정말요? "세계" 평화라고요? 제주도가 시공간의 법칙에 도전했어요...대체 어떻게 세계 평화가 한 장소에서 이뤄질 수 있는 걸까요?)
-         let's goyang (let’s 부디 일단 영어를 배워서 "let us"란 문구 뒤에 명사를 넣는 실수는 피해보아요)
-         city of masters ansung (좀 많이 촌스러워요, 80년대 티비 프로그램 제목인 masters of the universe 같아요~)
마지막 것을 보니 80년대 제가 초등학교를 다닐 때 아이들 사이에서 인기있었던 표현들로 가득한 짧은 슬로건들도 보고 지나가야겠단 생각이 드네요:
-         wow siheung
-         yes! Uiwang
-         ace yong-in
-         super pyeongtaek
-         best gimpo
-         viva boryeong
그리고 마지막으로 이상하게 재밌는 슬로건으로 마칠게요:
-         aha! suncheon (>_<)

첫번째로 엄청나게 많은 수의 도시 슬로건이 생겼다는게 좀 거슬려요. 외국인들이 울산에 이제 슬로건이 있다는 사실에 신경이나 쓸까요? 이렇게 작은 것까지 브랜딩 하면서 극단적으로 나갈 필요가 있는 걸까요? 그리고 더욱 중요한 비평인데, 놀랄만한 뉴스를 알려드리자면, 이 슬로건들은 별로 훌륭하지도 않아요. 어떤 특이점도 담고 있지 않고 그 도시들에 대한 이미지에 별 영향도 주지 않죠. 외국인이 'nice jechon'이란 슬로건을 보고 "와, 이건 정말로...음...nice하네, 다음주에 되돌아가는 비행기를 타기 전에 제천에 꼭 들러봐야겠다~"라고 생각할 거란 상상 하실 수 있으신가요?

짧고 시원하게 평가를 내려보자면, 브랜딩 전략에서 이 슬로건들은 그다지 훌륭하지 못하다고 할 수 있겠죠. 특별히 전하고자 하는 메시지가 있는 것 같지도 않고 그나마 어떤 의미라도 있는 것 같은 것들도 어색할 정도로 우스운 느낌이 드니까요.

브랜딩은 외우기 쉬운 슬로건 이상의 것입니다. 이 나라가 어떤 나라인지, 그리고 어떤 나라가 아닌지와, 다른 나라의 사람들이 어떻게 생각할지에 대한 이해가 바탕이 된 포괄적인 전략이지요.

그래서 이전의 "Dynamic Korea"(한 저널리스트는 먼저 나온 "Amazing Thailand"와 "Incredible India"를 너무 따라한 듯한 느낌이 들어 바꾼게 아니냐는 추측을 했었죠)를 대신해 최근까지 한국 슬로건으로 쓰였던 "Korea, Sparkling"에 대해서도 똑같은 평가를 할 수 밖에 없네요. 한국은 밤 거리의 네온사인 불빛과 화려한 팝 문화, 패현 악세서리 등에서 보면 sparkling(번쩍이는) 한 것이 맞지요. 하지만 "새롭고 깨끗한"의 번쩍임에 대한 함축이라면 별로 맞지 않는 것 같아요. 하지만 2010년에 한국은 다시 새로운 슬로건을 내놓았지요, 5년도 안 되는 시간동안 3번째 슬로건이네요. 하지만 새로운 슬로건 "Korea, Be inspired"도 그다지 변한 느낌은 없는 것 같죠...적어도 브랜딩 파워에 있어서는요. 제가 틀릴지도 모르지만, 제 느낌에는 이 슬로건 역시 수많은 도시 슬로건과 비슷한 방법으로 만든 것 같거든요: 그냥 영어로 듣기 좋은 단어("dynamic"도 듣기 좋지 않았나요?), 하지만 그 이상의 의미는 없지요. 결국 이런 점이 브랜딩 하는데 있어 이 슬로건의 부적합함을 드러낼 거라는 생각이 들어요.

마치면서 우리가 한국을 브랜드화 하는데 노력해야 하는 이유에 대해, 경제적 이득이 있으니까 라는 이유는 단지 절반의 이유일 뿐이라고 덧붙이고 싶어요.

사실은 적어도 정서적 측면에서 또 다른 이유가 있죠.

이렇게 얘기해 볼게요, 만약 지금 서양의 보통 사람들에게 한국의 이미지에 대해 물어본다면, 처음 돌아오는 답변에 보통은 실망하게 될거예요. 보통 사람들의 머리에 처음 떠오르는 것은 북한 문제나, 한국 국회의사당의 날아다니는 의자나, 대우 등 회사들의 부도(저도 오래된 얘기라는 거 알아요- 하지만 그 이미지가 많이 각인된 것 같아요), 아니면 긍정적인 면으로는 월드컵 정도...그것도 "그런데 사람들이 그냥 축구 경기 하나에 그렇게 미친 듯 행동한 거 참 골 때리지 않아?"라는 등의 덤이 딸려서 나올 수 있어요. >..<

적어도 저에게 한국이란 그보다 더 큰 의미가 있는 나라이고, 무엇보다도 훨씬 멋진 점이 많은 나라이기에, 국가 브랜드화라는 주제에 대해 개인적인 차원에서 신경을 쓰고 있어요. 그래서 앞서 말했던 경제적 이유를 벗어나 우리가 한국을 브랜드화 하는데 더 노력을 쏟아야 된다고 생각한답니다.

예고: 이 주제에 대해서는 조만간 한국이 브랜딩 전략으로 내세워야 할 긍정적이고 독특한 점이 무엇일지 더 구체적으로 쓸지도 모르겠어요. 지금 당장 너무 많이 힌트를 드리면 안되겠지만, 아마도 한국의 유일무이한 경제 성공 이야기에 대해(지금 떠오르는 건 50년도 채 되지 않는 산업화 기간동안의 인상적인 GDP 성장과 세계 최고로 도약한 조선사업, 반도체, 차량과 가전제품 사업이네요) 선전할 것 같아요, 그래도 더 보러 와주세요.

삼성의 허세인가 아니면 김영철이 거짓말을 하고 있는가? Is Samsung just a big bully or is Kim Yong-chul a liar?

“Liar, liar pants on fire!” Don’t we all miss these childish phrases that used to drive us mad with anger? Or how about “I am rubber, you are glue!”. Yes, yet another oldie but goodie that takes us back to the days of the old schoolyard. Well, or the boardroom of Korea’s largest, most powerful company in the year 2010. At least that’s what Samsung Electronics’ response to a book by Kim Yong-chul about the rampant corruption at the company reminds me of.

Mr. Kim is a high-profile whistleblower who after joining the company in 1997 functioned as its top legal counsel until quitting in 2004 and going public with his accusations in 2007. The country’s major newspapers have simply refused to review his book and denied him interviews. Anybody with even the most superficial understanding of the Korean media can easily gather from this not a lack of interest, but simply that Samsung has either actively pressured them not to cover the story, or that they have resorted to self-censorship out of fear of repercussions. Despite that, thanks to the Information Age, in form of twitter and blogging, the book became a bestseller and has now even been covered by the New York Times

Seeing that the topic has drawn international attention, it is puzzling that Samsung’s PR department considered the following an appropriate and sufficient response: “When you see a pile of excrement, you avoid it not because you fear it but because it’s dirty.”

While I am familiar with this Korean saying, it certainly does not look good outside of Korea (or for that matter within Korea), when used as a response to serious accusations and merely conveys Samsung’s arrogance and feeling of superiority.

So is Mr. Kim now a liar or not? While I will not address any details of his allegations, I think the safest answer is probably not but Samsung most definitely is a bully.

And most Koreans are aware of this, even without reading his book. Also, Mr. Kim’s book raises a much more fundamental question, the same way the presidential pardon of the Lee Kun-hee, the group’s leader and convicted felon, did just a few months earlier. Namely, what happens when companies get so big that they no longer need to obey the law; when they and not the democratically elected government start making the rules?

Of course, the obvious answer at this point seems to be “enough is enough”, but this revelation understandably does not come easily to many Koreans.

After all, Samsung has grown this powerful not so much by forcing control out of peoples’ hands- rather, they have surrendered it; or traded it in. Samsung is not like the much hated too-big-to-fail Wall Street firms. It employs thousands of Koreans in jobs they depend on, produces products they desire and are proud of, has raised them out of bitter poverty and still remains the focal point of their hopes for a future of prosperity and global significance.

And while the company can thus neither be pigeonholed as the country’s glorious savior nor its reckless monster, it looks like it is time for the Korean people to collectively step back from the canvas on which they paint the picture of the nation’s amazing economic growth and examine the larger questions concerning the independence of the press and above all, the concept of justice for all in a democracy.

"거짓말쟁이는 바지에 불 붙는다!" 어린 시절 우리를 그렇게도 화나게 했던 이 유치한 문구가 그립지 않은가? 아니면 "반사, 니가 한 말 다 되돌아간다!"는 어떤지. 그렇다, 유행 지난 말이지만 우리를 오래 전 학창시절로 되돌려주는 아련한 말이다. 혹은 2010년 한국의 가장 크고 강력한 이사회를 생각나게 한다. 적어도 나에겐 삼성 일렉트로닉이 회사에 성행하는 부패에 관한 김영철의 책에 보인 반응을 보고 떠오른 것이 그 말이었다.

김씨는 1997년 고문 변호사로 삼성에 들어가 2004년 그만 둔 후 2007년 공개적으로 내부고발을 하여 세간의 많은 주목을 끌었다. 한국의 주요 신문들은 그러나, 그 책의 리뷰를 싣는 것을 거부했을 뿐 아니라 인터뷰도 하지 않았다. 한국 미디어에 대해 조금이라도 이해가 있는 사람이라면 그것이 흥미가 없어서가 아니라, 삼성이 그 이야기를 쓰지 못하도록 직접적으로 압력을 넣었거나, 미디어에서 직접 뒷감당이 두려운 나머지 자체 편집을 결정한 것이라고 쉽게 알아챌 수 있을 것이다. 그럼에도 정보의 시대를 살고 있는 덕에, 트위터와 블로그들에서 책이 화자되어 베스트셀러가 되었고 이젠 뉴욕 타임즈에까지 실리게 되었다.

이 주제가 국제적 관심을 끈 것을 생각하면, 삼성의 프로모션 부서에서 "똥을 보면, 무서워서가 아니라 더러워서 피한다"는 태도의 반응을 보인 것을 이해하기 힘들어진다.

이 한국 속담은 많이 들어보았지만, 삼성이 이것을 오만함과 거만함의 표상과도 같이 그런 심각한 고발에 대한 대답으로 쓴 것은 해외에서는(혹은 국내에서조차도) 전혀 적절해보이지 않는다.

그럼 김씨는 거짓말쟁이일까? 여기서 그의 주장에 대해서는 자세히 언급하지 않겠지만, 그 질문에 관한 대답은 아마도 아니라고 할 수 있을 것이며 삼성은 아마도 허세를 부리고 있는 것이 맞을 것이다.

그리고 대부분의 한국인들도 이것을 알고 있다, 그 책을 읽지 않았어도 말이다. 또한 그의 책은 훨씬 근본적인 질문을 던진다, 그룹의 대표이자 유죄를 선고받은 죄인인 이건희가 대통령 특별사면을 받은 것이 몇 달 전이었다. 회사들이 너무 커져서 더이상 법을 따를 필요가 없다면 무슨 일이 생기는 걸까; 민주주의 원칙으로 뽑은 정부가 아니라 그들이 법칙을 만들기 시작한다면?

물론 이쯤에서 그 대답은 "정도껏 해야지"가 되겠지만, 별로 많은 한국인들이 그 답을 얻은 것 같지는 않다.

결국 삼성이 지금의 힘을 얻은 것은 사람들의 손에서 빼앗아낸 것이 아니라, 받아냈거나, 교환한 것이다. 삼성은 그리도 미움받지만 망하기엔 너무 큰 월 스트리트 회사와는 다르다. 삼성은 수 많은 한국인들의 일터이며, 한국인들이 원하고 자랑스러워하는 제품들을 만들고, 쓰디 썼던 가난을 벗어나게 해주었으며, 한국의 번영과 국제적 위상을 상징하는 존재인 것이다.

그래서 삼성은 국가의 영광스런 구세주로 기억되거나 미움받는 괴물 또한 될 수는 없겠지만, 한국인들이 국가의 놀라운 경제 성장을 그리고 있던 캔버스에서 한 발짝 물러나 미디어의 독립, 혹은 민주주의에서 모두를 위한 정의의 개념과 같은 더 커다란 문제들을 되짚어 볼 때가 온 것 같다.

It’s springtime in Korea…at last

I think this winter must have been the longest and coldest in my life. At least it felt like that…which probably is also related to the terrible heating in my current apartment, which is prone to ‘malfunctioning’ aka simply doesn’t work.

Try turning off the radiators next time winter comes around, then open all your windows for a day and go sleep in a down jacket covered with three blankets and you will get a hang for what it was like.

But now that temperatures are finally picking up it feels like a very special spring.

Taking a walk close to my home, I took a few pictures of the breathtakingly beautiful cherry blossoms with my painfully inadequate cell phone camera…I hope you enjoy them nonetheless! ^^*

이번 겨울은 제 생에서 제일 길고 추운 겨울이었던 것 같아요. 적어도 기분이 그랬어요...지금 살고 있는 집의 난방이 '기능 불량' 일명, 아예 작동되지 않는 것과 관계가 있겠지요.

다음 겨울이 오면 하룻동안 난방을 끄고 창문을 다 연 채로 두꺼운 점퍼를 입고 이불 세 장을 덮고 주무셔 보세요, 그럼 아마 제 경험이 어땠는지 이해가 가실거예요.

하지만 이제 드디어 기온이 올라가기 시작해서 아주 특별한 봄처럼 느껴져요.

집 근처에서 산책을 하다가 제 되먹지 못한 휴대폰 카메라로 정말 예쁜 벚꽃 사진 몇 장을 찍었어요...그래도 마음에 드셨으면 좋겠네요! ^^*

At this point I would like to thank everybody for the helpful feedback we received and assure you that we will continue improving.

For the next couple of months we have mainly planned to start a more aggressive marketing strategy and then somewhere down the road we will try to pitch some of our products to a few shops in Seoul.

As with most new business ideas, everything is progressing with baby steps so far, but it’s good fun to have the extra challenge!

And on the special occasion of today, let me share an early design study that my friend made while developing the graphic concept for Milky Rain mueslis- I think it’s pretty cool! ^.,^

Other than that, all I can say is, if you haven’t tried our mueslis yet, by all means do so, it sure is something different from what you eat most of the time! ^^*
