Who is GWES and why does it keep apologizing?

I’ve seen this question a few times on the newsgroup so I thought I’d take a stab at it. We’re having another freak winter storm in Redmond so it’s not like I can leave work anyway…

What is GWES?

Gwes is the Graphical Windowing and Event Subsystem. It’s one little program that draws all the controls on the device like scrollbars, buttons, and checkboxes. It also handles passing window messages back and forth between applications and manages the WndProcs of all of the programs on the device that are displaying UI.

So why does it crash all the time?

A crash dump (“Watson dump”) is usually triggered by an unhandled exception in a program. It packages up a callstack and some diagnostics and queues it for transmission up to our Windows Error Reporting database.

If a program (let’s call it test.exe) crashes inside WinMain, the exception gets out to the unhandled exception trap in the kernel which creates the Watson dump and then terminates test.exe.

But what if test.exe crashes inside its WndProc? The exception travels up the callstack. The next process up the callstack is GWES – GWES is the process that calls each WndProc in the first place, because it’s marshalling the window messages throughout the system.

What if GWES didn’t handle exceptions that were thrown from your WndProc? Then any crashing WndProc would crash GWES without fail and take down the entire system. That doesn’t happen, so we know that’s not true. GWES handles exceptions thrown out of other WndProcs. So GWES is responsible for triggering a Watson dump when another program crashes in a WndProc.

The problem is that when the Watson dump is created, it sees that GWES is at the top of the callstack, so GWES gets the place of honor in the Watson UI that you see in the screenshot above. We have fixed this for future versions of the system [edit: including WM6] - crashes inside a WndProc will show the correct process name in the "We're Sorry..." UI.

Sometimes it really is just sorry.

That said, it is possible that GWES really is crashing for some reason. So please keep sending those error reports up to us. We use them to diagnose problems and prioritize fixes towards the crashes that customers are hitting the most often.

Seeing messages being send without something in the Outbox? This could be a stuck read receipt. Before doing anything make sure you have a current backup of your mailbox (just in case)

Download MDBVU32.EXE from Microsoft. Extract the downloaded file and run mdbvu32.exe from within the extracted folder.

Press OK on the first screen
Select MDB-> Open Message Store and select your default pst-file (the one with the D in front of it) and press Open
Select MDB-> Open Root Folder

Open the default message store

You’ll find the “Read:” message in the middle pane called “Messages in Folder”

Read Receipt visible in MDBVU32.EXE

Select the “Read:” message
In the Operations available select lpMDB->AbortSubmit() (ON SELECTED MSG)
Press Call Function and then OK

Confirm to Abort the submission of the Read Receipt”

Make sure the message is still selected
In the Operations available select lpFld->DeleteMessages() (ON SELECTED MSGS)
Press Call Function and then OK

The “Messages in Folder” pane should now be empty

Read Receipt deleted through MDBVU32.EXE
Press Close

Select MDB-> Store Logoff and then OK and then OK again on the information message
Select Session-> Logoff

You can now close the open window called MDB Viewer Test Application

Open Outlook and the notice that the stuck receipt is gone.

제주도 다녀와서 나른한 일요일 오후 바람 쐬고 싶어 고민하던 중 마눌님이 가 보고 싶다고

이야기 해서 바로 다녀온 CJ 푸드 나들이입니다.

CJ 푸드 본사로 들어가 봅니다.

1층 입구로 들어가서 보이는 뚜레쥬르 내부 모습입니다.

브런치 먹으면 좋을 듯한 느낌이네요?

아이들을 위한 요리 놀이(?) 공간 같은 곳도 있습니다.

IKEA에서 많이 보던 소품들이... ㅎㅎㅎ

요리 강습이 이루어지는 공간인데, 시간이 안 맞아서 그런지 조용하네요.

지하로 내려가시면 보이는 'the Voice of Korea' 광고판...

지하에는 CJ에서 하는 프렌차이즈 및 매장들이 모여 있습니다.

정종이 생각 나는 삼호어묵 매장입니다.

가볍게 하나 시켜서 어묵 한 조각 냠냠~ :-)

매장 중 가장 유명한 곳인 '제일제면소'입니다.

조용한 일요일인데도 사람이 많았습니다.

개인 취향이지만 맛있다고 주문한 '모밀비빔면'인데, 양념도 강하고 가격대비는 별로인 듯...

지하 매장들을 지도로 그려놓기도 했네요.

표지판이 눈에는 더 잘 들어옵니다. ㅎㅎㅎ

시식하고는 맛있다고 느꼈던 수제 햄 '프레시안매장'

아들이 먹고 싶어하던 '차이나팩토리' 짜장면인데, 시켜 놓고는 안 먹어서 제가 다 먹은 듯...

가볍게 재미삼아 한 번쯤은 가 볼만한 곳입니다.

현재는 아이폰4를 사용 중이지만, 역시 디자인은 3Gs...

사무실에 연동 테스트용 아이폰이 상태가 너무 안 좋았는데,

뒷판 어셈블리를 통으로 사셔서 교체해 드렸습니다.

MS, 개발자에게 윈도폰 7 망고 빌드 7712 배포

MS는 윈도폰 SDK 7.1 베타 2 리프레시판과 개발자용 망고 OS 빌드 7712를 배포한다고 밝혔습니다. MS의 개발자 프로그램에 가입한 경우 실제 스마트폰에 설치할 수 있습니다.

이번에 배포된 빌드는 7월 27일자로 RTM 승인을 받은 빌드(관련 기사)는 아니지만 RC 단계의 빌드이기 때문에 개발자가 망고용 앱을 준비하는 데는 문제가 없을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

망고에서 Facebook chat 활성화

망고에서 Messaging 내에서 Facebook chat 을 기본적으로 지원합니다.

활성화가 안 되어서 제대로 안 되는건가 하다가 검색하니 나오는군요... ㅡㅡ^
